Is this the best they can do for art show concepts? Talk about dumbing down a generation. Why not just buy the toys? They’re more affordable.
Every artist who’s work was shown is capable of way more thought provoking material when given the chance to develop their own concepts. It’s just sad to see that galleries and curators are deriving such dum dum themes for show when they have such accomplished contemporary artists such as Derek Hess, Estevan Orieol and Tim Biskup at their disposal.
Such a waste of talent. This must be a preemptive promo machine for a possible upcoming Star Wars project? Speaking of that, Mr. Lucas should spend more money on writers than he does on cgi. My childhood memories are gone down the crapper.
About the same quality as those painted farm animals that turn up around the city every few years–which is to say, crappy. But a nice big plug for George Lucas’s crap factory!

hey Dee. i am one of the artists who worked on this “dum dum theme” show, and it’s funny you mention the names you did because honestly those people are more illustrators than fine artists. so this is right up their alley. actually going through the catalog i’m thinking the majority of the artists involved are more commercial than anything. as for the theory about this being a promotional thing for the sake of a possible new movie. you couldn’t be more wrong. these things were painted 4 years ago. during those 4 years the show has traveled all over the world. because of that an assload of people who like starwars, but may not be familiar with all of these artists have now been exposed to their work. that is why i did it. all of the artists who participated in this project get plenty of opportunities to show off their work, but they all chose to do this because they wanted to, and not because it was the only forum available. p.s. screw your childhood memories. i have them too and i am proud i was invited to participate. i was psyched when i opened that box and saw that production darth vader mask.

Awesome. LOVE people that hate on stuff like this. A lot of these people LOVE Star Wars and were I offered a chance to do a friggin’ Vader helmet? I’d be all over it! Seriously, Dee. You’d be peeved if YOU got the chance? As I’m getting older I’m also LOVING all the grumpy old Star Wars fans who hate on the new stuff and say it’s crap, doesn’t have a story and he uses too much CGI. Younger kids LOVE the new films AND the Clone Wars series! I agree with Dee! Screw your childhood memories, dude. Evolve or wallow in your own nostalgia. You’re gonna be one of those old guys who desperately clings to ‘the gold old days’. Move forward and enjoy exhibits like this that feature such an iconic image and character instead of just bashing the crap out of it. Stop sounding like such an armchair critic and just enjoy how cool it is that some truly amazing artists got the chance to both show off their talents and be a part of such a great exhibit that Star Wars fans young and old are going to enjoy for a long time!
Errata ‘I agree with Dee!’ should’ve been ‘I agree with soule23!’ I type at around 97 wpm and I was a little too passionate about writing this response. :)
