Philip Seymour Hoffman as romantic lead? Apparently, that’s the deal with Jack Goes Boating, a film adaptation of an Off Broadway play that finds our hero slowly, painfully wooing an almost-as-awkward Amy Ryan and learning to face his fear of the water. Judging by the trailer, the movie looks suspiciously “quirky” and “uplifting,” but then we’ve rarely known Hoffman to lend his talents to an unworthy project.
