The Definitive Mad Men Summer Reading List

Books about or influential to Mad Men

From Those Wonderful Folks Who Gave You Pearl Harbor — Jerry Della Femina (1970)
The author of a controversial ad-biz memoir that largely inspired Mad Men has just reissued his 40-year-old classic, just in time for the show’s season four premiere. Now that’s a good tie-in.
Read: Katie Roiphe’s recent interview with Della Femina

Mad Men Unbuttoned: A Romp Through 1960s America — Natasha Vargas-Cooper (2010)
This just-released history was adapted from Vargas-Cooper’s Footnotes of Mad Men blog, an addictive read that examines the cultural context of the series in all its delicious minutia.
Read: An excerpt of the book at The Awl

Mad Men and Philosophy: Nothing Is as It Seems — ed. Rod Carveth and James B. South (2010)
Like the other books in its series, which include The Daily Show and The Office, Mad Men and Philosophy analyzes the richly symbolic series through the lenses of Plato, Aristotle, Milton Friedman, Ayn Rand, and more. A definite treat for those who like to read a lot into a show that certainly supports complex interpretation.
Read: The first chapter, “What Fools We Were: Mad Men, Hindsight, and Justificaiton” (PDF)

The Fashion File: Advice, Tips, and Inspiration from the Costume Designer of Mad Men — Janie Bryant with Monica Corcoran Harel
Finally, a style guide from the lady who brought us Joan Holloway’s signature va-va-voom. The book, which won’t be out till October 25th, gives both an inside look at the way Bryant put together each character’s look and tips for women hoping to overhaul their fashion to match their personality.
