Quimby’s – Chicago, IL

Image via Wonkavision
While some argue over whether Quimby’s is a legitimate comic shop or merely a bookstore that sells a lot of comics, we prefer to avoid the semantics debate in favor of celebrating this awesome spot. Since 1991, it’s been a clubhouse for local notable artists — and yes, those signs whose style looks so familiar were painted by the one and only Chris Ware. Along with stocking a wide range of comics, books (there’s a section known simply as “Mayhem”), zines stationary supplies, and even an adult section, Quimby’s hosts readings and a monthly Works in Progress meet-up.

Atlantis fantasyworld in Santa Cruz is the best comics store I’ve been to. Good selection, unpretentious and friendly!
I cannot believe you missed the greatest comic shop on the planet: The Android’s Dungeon & Baseball Card Shop in Springfield.
I think Cosmic Monkey is the actual best comic store in Portland : )
Wow – great list, except that you left off one major store that is as good if not better than the rest of these – Isotope Comics in San Francisco!
Chapel Hill Comics! I hope one day it makes lists like this. It is my local shop and it is amazing.
Big ups to Bedrock Comics in Houston. Great staff, intuitive layouts, and as four linked stores they’re a deep back issue resource.
Meltdown kicks the sheit out of secret headquarters and it’s literally just down the street
[...] Atomic Books was recently named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America. [...]
I have to agree with what Bill said about Meltdown. But, the best comic shop on the west coast is The Comic Bug in Manhattan Beach. These guys bring their love for comics beyond the store’s 4 walls. They regularly go to libraries & schools trying introduce kids to comics & spreading the joy of reading. When their shop burned down, they set up tables in the parking lot so people could still buy their Wednesday comics. Mike the manager actually writes comics profesionlly, including the Battlestar Galactica manga & his own creation Goin South. They hold signings nearly weekly, host drawing clubs, Comics Guild meetings, open mics, and are open to independents coming in to sell their work. It’s a place definitely worthy of being on top of the list.

I’m from New York City and I’m still shocked that Isotope in San Francisco isn’t on this list.
St. Louis’ Star Clipper should be on this list. It is, hand’s down, one of the most amazing comic book stores in the United States.
I’m really surprised Meltdown Comics is not in there
What about Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find in Charlotte NC.
They have their own convention.
They gave birth to Matt Fraction and Dustin Harbin.
RESPECT
Really? forbidden planet? Over Midtown comics? Forbidden doesn’t even sell back issues? This is a dumb list. But Bergin and Laughing Ogre do rock!
Arcane, What a great shop, great staff, friendly, and smart.
I went to the Portland shop while on vacation this summer. I also visited Omaha, NE’s Planet Krypton, where I was very impressed.
I really enjoy comics Relief, but I’ve never had good customer service there. Great stock though,
[...] at Flavorwire.com, they have compiled a list of the Top 10 Comic Stores in America. This is interesting, but it seems like their list was rather skewed to the indie/hipster vibe. I [...]

With all due respect to The Secret Headquarters — and Meltdown (which is awesome)…AND Hi De Ho (which is also awesome) — but GOLDEN APPLE is THE Greatest Comic and Graphic Novel Store in Los Angeles.
Also great — Oxford Comics Games & More in Atlanta.
Desert Island on Metropolitan is my favorite comic store in New York City – one guy runs the place and gives great recommendations. The selection is more limited – indies and classic comics mostly – but it’s hard not to come out with something great.
YAYY Heroes! Honorable Mention! WOOO Love the guy with the Mowhawk!
We have a great shop here in Mississippi called Action Island Comics in Ridgeland near Jackson. Great selection of indies and mainstream, a 20% off the cover discount, and almost all back issues over six months old are only a dollar.
St Mark´s Comics in NY (one in 8th and one in Brooklyn) is friender than Forbidden Planet. My last time in FP was very dessapointing.
To not even name Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find in Charlotte, NC is a tragedy. Shame on you. This list is a joke.
What not a single Canadian store makes the list? Where is the Silver Snail or The Beguiling in Toronto? What happened to The Spider’s Web in Vancouver? We have so much to offer and been around just as long I can’t believe they don’t even get an honourable mention! Shame Shame Shame.

The post’s title — “AMERICA’S 10 Greatest Comic and Graphic Novel Stores” — may have a little something to do with it.
[...] Flavorwire lists 10 amazing comic shops. I’ve been to Quimbys in Chicago many times and would have to agree. I have finished writing book one of Jessica Parasol, Daytime Ghost Hunter. The story will be 3 issues long with the first coming soon. Can’t wait to share it with you. [...]
st. mark’s & desert island get a mention over jim hanley? really?

Million Year Picnic, New England’s oldest comics shop, has been at the same funky Harvard Square location for 35 years. Though it’s small and crowded, its selection is (and has always been) choice, its staff knowledgeable, and its vibe intensely geeky. A great, enduring regional institution, not to be overlooked in a list like this one . . .
