America’s 10 Greatest Comic and Graphic Novel Stores

Floating World – Portland, OR

Image via

In a small city with a relatively large number of comic stores, Floating World stands out for the sharp, cool aesthetic of its owner, Jason Leivian, who says he wants the place to have the feel of a record store. He caters to both your standard comic dudes, curating the best of the Marvel and DC stables, and indie types, as small publishers appear to be Leivian’s own personal favorites. The store also stocks art and design books and hosts exhibitions. And their website is beautiful. Leivian’s spirit is DIY through and through. As he told one interviewer, “We do zines, consignment and I never turn down anything.” For real, though we are based in New York, which has some of the best comic stores in the country, this one makes us jealous.

York Comics & Cards in Parma, Ohio Great location right by Holy Family Church!

Million Year Picnic, New England's oldest comics shop, has been at the same funky Harvard Square location for 35 years. Though it's small and crowded, its selection is (and has always been) choice, its staff knowledgeable, and its vibe intensely geeky. A great, enduring regional institution, not to be overlooked in a list like this one . . .

Read an illustrated novel and get the same satisfaction, Feisengrad, Book One and see the website, Feisengrad.com, about a government run by baseball umpires who call the residents of The Z, safe and out.

st. mark's & desert island get a mention over jim hanley? really?

@David T.G. Riches The post's title -- "AMERICA'S 10 Greatest Comic and Graphic Novel Stores" -- may have a little something to do with it.

What not a single Canadian store makes the list? Where is the Silver Snail or The Beguiling in Toronto? What happened to The Spider's Web in Vancouver? We have so much to offer and been around just as long I can't believe they don't even get an honourable mention! Shame Shame Shame.

To not even name Heroes Aren't Hard to Find in Charlotte, NC is a tragedy. Shame on you. This list is a joke.

St Mark´s Comics in NY (one in 8th and one in Brooklyn) is friender than Forbidden Planet. My last time in FP was very dessapointing.

We have a great shop here in Mississippi called Action Island Comics in Ridgeland near Jackson. Great selection of indies and mainstream, a 20% off the cover discount, and almost all back issues over six months old are only a dollar.

YAYY Heroes! Honorable Mention! WOOO Love the guy with the Mowhawk!

Desert Island on Metropolitan is my favorite comic store in New York City - one guy runs the place and gives great recommendations. The selection is more limited - indies and classic comics mostly - but it's hard not to come out with something great.

With all due respect to The Secret Headquarters -- and Meltdown (which is awesome)...AND Hi De Ho (which is also awesome) -- but GOLDEN APPLE is THE Greatest Comic and Graphic Novel Store in Los Angeles. Also great -- Oxford Comics Games & More in Atlanta.

I really enjoy comics Relief, but I've never had good customer service there. Great stock though,

I went to the Portland shop while on vacation this summer. I also visited Omaha, NE's Planet Krypton, where I was very impressed.

Arcane, What a great shop, great staff, friendly, and smart.

Really? forbidden planet? Over Midtown comics? Forbidden doesn't even sell back issues? This is a dumb list. But Bergin and Laughing Ogre do rock!

What about Heroes Aren't Hard to Find in Charlotte NC. They have their own convention. They gave birth to Matt Fraction and Dustin Harbin. RESPECT

I'm really surprised Meltdown Comics is not in there
