Video of the Day: The Quintessential Hip-Hop Music Video

It’s no longer novel to point out the most common themes of hip-hop music videos: girls in skimpy clothing, expensive vehicles, rappers throwing money around or showing off their bling. But artist Thomas Traum elevates that derisive conversation with his video, Boats*Cars*Dollars*Girls*Helicopters*Jewellery*Skylines, his “attempt to construct the most generic Rap and R&B video out of many.” By setting the five-minute mash-up to the music of Gustave Mahler, Traum drives home his argument that, “Through their likeness [hip-hop videos] seem to be almost ‘classic’, just as classic theater or opera.”
