Book Trailer: The Autobiography and Sex Life of Andy Warhol

“It’s not actually an autobiography, nor is there that much talk of sex in it,” author John Wilcock tells us in the trailer for his recently reissued The Autobiography and Sex Life of Andy Warhol , which originally appeared in 1971. Instead, he explains, “What the book is, is a series of about 20 different people close to Andy Warhol at the end of the ’60s all trying to ‘explain’ him.”

The first author to publish a biography of Warhol, Wilcock was an insider in the pop svengali’s world, a Factory regular in the ’60s and ’70s who was privy to many film shoots and the guy who inspired Warhol to found Interview. But instead of interviewing his subject (who would give “answers like, ‘Well, what do you think?’ or ‘Uh-huh’ or something totally noncommittal”) his curiosity about his enigmatic friend led him to interview other members of Warhol’s inner circle for clues into his personality and art.
