Literature’s 10 Best-Dressed Authors

21

Edith Wharton

Edith Wharton was a lifelong member of the fashionable upper crust, but brazenly undermined the lifestyle she was born into — whether by divorcing her alcoholic husband, or occasionally writing erotica in her journal — while also redefining its tastes. She wore sumptuous gowns with lavish frills, and her two little dogs, often by her side (or, on her shoulders), were her favorite accessories. Her written descriptions of European couture houses often determined which designers became the most sought-after among the American elite, and her writings on household design influenced popular trends.

You’ve forgotten Saul Bellow: http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2005/04/05/international/05cnd-bellow.3.html

There should be some form-to-substance consideration here. Tom Wolfe is like a cartoon version of Bellow’s rakish hats and sharply tailored suits. Only Wolfe can’t write, whereas Bellow gave us such descriptions as, “eyebrows like caterpillars on the Tree of Knowledge” and the man with a peg leg “bending and straightening gracefully like a gondolier.”

No Italians in this Top Ten? Ridiculous. You haven’t done your homework, folks!

Tom Wolfe looks like Paul Daniels on Strictly; there’s no way that’s a fashion.

Jane Austen stated a very strong preferences for bonnets trimmed with flowers, MOT vegetables! Fashion conscious indeed.

fun, but more like best dressed historical authors. time to update the list… and what is an actor doing on it? sigh.

I would have included Truman Capote instead of Wolfe… he was flamboyant, eccentric and his appearance was a statement.

As probably one of the few(?) who knows who Donna Tartt is, I was happy to see her on the list but suspect the ulterior motive is to try to shake out some more info on her.

ezra pound anyone?
perhaps hilda doolittle

I’m with Vittorio–ever seen any photos of Nick Tosches? Sartorially sublime…

duh. it isn’t like Blair Waldorf is on the cutting edge of fashion. And she only said George Sand to please the professor or what have you on that episode.

Joan Didion and Gay Talese!

You can’t leave my beloved nihilist dandy Paul Bowles off this list!
