Oh Land (Hype Machine party at Backstage Bar, 10.21)

Amid the overstuffed chaos of Hype Machine’s ambitiously booked para-CMJ party, which had a different artist scheduled to take tiny Backstage Bar’s stage each half hour, Oh Land made us forget about the drunk girls in stilettos who kept stomping on our toes. Taking the stage with a drummer and an enormous music box on wheels, with drum pads sticking out of it and balloons on top, the dramatically dressed Danish pop siren sounded something like a lo-fi, Post-era Björk. – JB

Seriously, I am shocked. The best bands this year weren’t even mentioned on this list – save Marnie Stern, Oh Land, Times New Viking. Hands down, of six showcases I saw, best ones were: Kitten, Reptar, Kids of 88, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.

Dom suck balls.

Big Freedia was the *bomb*. Soooooooo much fun. I saw her twice and bought a CD!

Dean & Britta doing Galaxie 500 songs was pretty special, too.

Tamar-kali killed it opening for Fishbone at LPR.

Only caught a handful of shows but a couple of standouts were:

Screaming Females at Music Hall of Williamsburg – Very impressive. Marissa Paternoster is one of the nastiest guitarists around.

Surfer Blood at Bowery Ballroom 10/23 – I know they’re already a big deal but great live show, far beyond my expectations from listening to the album.

Saw DOM at bowery and thought maybe they were a joke! They weren’t playing most of the stuff I was hearing. I think they have a pretty intense backing track going on.

Yes, you missed Dean Wareham playing Galaxie 500. Old but so what, still utter class.

[...] Massachusetts garage rockers Dom filled in the middle slot on a stacked bill at MOG’s CMJ “Opening Night” Party at Brooklyn Bowl last week. While they had some detractors, they managed to win over a writer from Flavorwire: To be honest, we didn’t have high hopes for Dom — perhaps because they were sandwiched between two of our favorites, Screaming Females and Yo La Tengo. But they certainly lived up to their billing, charming us with silly, catchy tracks off their debut EP, Sun Bronzed Greek Gods. The band, with its eponymous, shaggy-haired, nasal frontman, combines simple, Ramones-style punk with ‘70s cock-rock flourishes, an oil-and-water mixture emulsified by pure, good-natured enthusiasm. Highlights included “Bochicha,” a shouty sing-along track about Dom’s cat, and “Living in America,” with its jokey synths and funnier “It’s so sexy to be living in America” chorus. [...] Flavorpill’s Favorite Finds from CMJ 2010 It’s easy to get cranky about New York’s annual CMJ Music Marathon, with its long lines, short sets, and general air of overstimulated panic. But although we generally go kicking and screaming to our first showcase and spend its last few days on the brink of collapse, we can’t deny that it brings some of the best music from around the world to our corner of the world for five days of dancing, drinking, and discovery. [...]

Oh Land was incredible at CMJ! Not only is she gorgeous, but she is a great live performer. You should check her out if you haven’t already and get her new EP!!!

DOM definitely play everything except for 2 backing tracks for synths on 2 songs but that is better than most bands these days. Anything they lack vocally is definitely made up with the sick guitar skill of that kid Cosmo. He shreds it every time. Probably even too good for the band he is in.
