Slowdown (Omaha, Nebraska)
One of America’s greatest music scenes of the 21st century, Omaha got the rock club it truly deserved in Slowdown. Operated by Saddle Creek Records — the driving force behind Omaha’s musical ascendancy — the venue opened in 2000 in the heart of the city’s artsy NoDo neighborhood. Esquire named Slowdown its Club of the Year in 2008, praising the place for its “mirrored bar, comfortable lounge chairs, and terrific sight lines provided by balconies that overlook a large, sunken floor in front of the stage.” Slowdown’s diverse upcoming lineup includes everyone from The Queers to Mogwai.

An interesting list Judy.I also like Silent Barn in Brooklyn,NY for great little shows.
I love Silent Barn! Shea’s commitment to recording put them over the top for me, but some of my favorite shows have been at SB.
… Love, love, love Bottletree. Very good food and the coolest bands.
Best venues in the WORLD??? You mean in the USA, right?! Since when did the US became the whole world?!
What about SPACELANDDDD or the ECHO!!! in LA???? Where the f are your LA spots?????? Echo park and silver lake represent!
@Josh T
Save some punctuation for everybody else! Spaceland opened in 1995. The Echo was actually an oversight — I thought it had opened in the ’90s, but apparently it debuted in 2001.
The National in Richmond, VA is a must see venue. It was a theatre back at the turn of the century, but its beeen restored, is stunningly beautiful and has one of the best sound systems on the East Coast. It’s a true hidden gem.
La Poisson Rouge is a great shout though. Love it.

Since there is an international audience, is it possible to re-entitle this as “The 10 Greatest New Music Venues of the 21st Century in the USA?”
Mercury Lounge is still tops in NYC
Turner Hall / Pabst Theater in Milwaukee deserves a mention (at the very least in the comments.) It has re-invigorated the Milwaukee scene

I recommend City Winery in NYC. The food is great, the service is excellent, and the shows are KILLER! A little pricey, but well worth it. Unlike many things in NYC, here you actually get what you pay for.
Lincoln Hall in Chicago. Nothing like a small venue, and this one was done right!
yes please get the f***ing title straight — I only came here because I thought it implies worldwide
How about Live @ Drew’s in Ringwood, N.J.???? Graham Parker, Willie Nile, Alejandro Escovedo, Jesse Malin, Elliott Murphy, Rhett Miller, Lenny Kaye in a setting that’s just like someone’s living room. Oh yeah, wait a minute. It *is* somebody’s living room!
For dc the red palace is atrocious -
930 club is one of the best venues in the WORLD, hands down. But for new venues, how about the restored 6th & I street Synagogue. Last years Antony & The Johnsons show was among the best in many a moon. Perfect place with perfecting music.
Mari is right.
“Live@Drew’s….the only house concert that matters…at least thats what it says on his tee shirt…
the cat club on 13th street in NYC was a great little spot back in the day
Phoenix has two great venues downtown for live music, but definitely needs a large venue that can hold crowds in the hundreds. The Trunk Space gets all kinds of obscure, artsy, underground touring acts passing through. The Rhythm Room is mainly a blues bar, but will also have indie rock acts. Local indie bands like to do their CD release parties there.
theres so many other ones that could go on this list… the crystal ballroom ( portland) the mercury lounge, etc.
oph yea what about echo/ spaceland? Well spaceland is closed down….
putting detroit bar, which has probably ten bad shows for every good one, ahead of acrobatics everyday, which is curated, all-ages, and diy. i’ve had some good times at detroit bar, but never anything close to the best of what ae’s done.

Yes, yes, yes to the Slowdown! It’s this Brooklynite’s favorite venue, hands down.
Detroit Bar has some good local acts play regularly and gets a few rad touring bands occasionally, fun venue to be sure. But to call their drinks “strong” is a malicious untruth to drinkers everywhere. Seriously, get your buzz on before you get to Detroit.
