After releasing an album loaded with star-studded collaborations from the likes of Robyn and Lykke Li, Norwegian duo Röyksopp let the music speak for itself on the follow-up, Senior.
The release is a calculated counterpart to last year’s Junior, a record that made no attempt to hide its dance-floor filling aspirations. Senior, on the other hand, is a mostly instrumental album, choosing to revel instead in its own textures, sounds, and blissed-out environs. The short explanation is that the duo decided to focus on its more mature side here, but there’s more complexity to it than that. Instead, it’s a chance to show what the two can do when there’s no one else around to steal the spotlight, and when careful thought takes equal precedence to dance-inducing hooks.
