11 Cultural Resolutions for 2011

17

11. Young artists will find a positive way to describe their culture.

At the beginning of 2010, the word “hipster” was everywhere — and we have been as guilty of using and abusing it as anyone. This fall, though, the conversation turned to the end of the hipster era. While we don’t believe things are as clear-cut as all that, we are sick of seeing young, creative people lumped in with do-nothing trustafarians and yuppies with ironic mustaches. After a year when 20-somethings constantly under attack — as many of us struggled to find jobs and make lives for ourselves amid an economic disaster our parents’ generation caused — we need to find better ways to celebrate our art and culture so that we aren’t ashamed to defend it.

” There should be room for other, newer voices that don’t fall under the Pitchfork umbrella.” Amen.

This is all most excellent.

Can we keep 3-D and get rid of Saw movies?

“Lady rappers will be allowed to rap.”

You apparently never considered the possibility that Nicki Minaj sung on her record because she wanted to sing, not rap. In your rush to empower women — let them express themselves how they want, goddamnit! — you actually ended up implying they don’t have control over their own creative output, and patronizing them even more.

God and just in general, you guys sound like the oldest fogeys in the whole world on this list. “Oh no, 3D movies give me headaches! I like the olden days, before talkies! Where’s my arthritis medication? My grandchildren never visit anymore!” Calm down, Hepzibah.

I agree with all that Judy has put into this list, please no more remakes of great films just because it’s not in English doesn’t mean people don’t want to see it. And in response to Daniels comment would an old fogey be talking about giving graffiti artists more room in the art front? I think not. It’s so easy for people to sit on there asses and make negative comments, why don’t you support the fact that Flavorpill actually know what’s going on culture wise. It’s a much better alternative to Rolling Stones shitty top ten lists

Freedom of expression is neither a guarantee that people have to agree with or like what you are saying, nor is it a guarantee that you should be supported. It is merely a legal distinction that you cannot be prosecuted for any non libelous speech. If you say/paint/mold something offensive, you should expect to be criticized and ridiculed, you should not expect to be funded with tax dollars. You should also not expect to be put in prison.

This list is hands down the best compilation of resolutions that need to sustain in 2011.
I only disagree with one mentioned: James Franco is a multi-pop culture delight!

I enjoyed this list. I’d also like to add one of my own: People will start to show an ounce of accountability when commenting online. Ah yes, those delightful bundles of online joy who only contribute petty, snide remarks to insighful and (in this case) well-written articles. Much like “Daniel’s” 2nd comment seen here. Would that really be your response if you were at a dinner party or bar? Either add something to the conversation or shut up. Stop wasting your own time.

You forget Rae Rae. She’s awesome and has the thing to make it happen. Give her some cred.

As someone who lived in New York City when illegal graffiti took over my transportation system, I reject the romanticization of outlaw painters (not “artists”) who should be hunted down and arrested. Jeffrey Deitch simply displayed his surprising lack of sophistication once he reigned over a public space with a public view. Welcome to the un-rarefied, open air outside the gallery, Jeff.

[...] this news turns out to be true, we say forget giving someone else a turn in the cultural spotlight in 2011, this is more of a case of knowing your own limitations. Instead, [...]

Just because many 3D movies suck doesn’t mean all 3D movies have to suck. Don’t be like the people who screeched about movies in color, movies with sound, etc. were just “gimmicks”. It’s a young medium yet. Sooner or later, the auteurs of 3D will emerge and make something great out of it.

What’s a “literary novel”? Is that like some sorta readin’ book? Also, James Franco is the gift that keeps on giving. Don’t stifle him.

I’m going to hold you to your hipster resolution! it’s about frigging time!
