Awesome Infographic: Kanye West vs. Bob Dylan

8

We’re not quite sure what inspired the folks at VOXY to compare Bob Dylan with Kanye West — although you could certainly make the argument that each is the voice of his generation. Examining the language in West’s My BeautifuL Dark Twisted Fantasy and Dylan’s 1965 masterpiece Highway 61 Revisited turns up a few interesting overlaps: both stars have a thing for Jesus and Napoleon (which kind of makes sense in an “icons obsessed with icons” way). But while West is all about brands, “power,” and “douchebags,” Dylan prefers figures from his own (Queen Jane, Mister Jones) and American (“highway,” “bandits”) mythology. Can they even be compared!

Why would you draw such a bizarre comparison? The two aren’t even in the same league. In fact, it’s hard to even call Kanye West a “musician”.

I have always, and always will disagree with the statement that Kanye is the voice of this generation. I have seen more headlines about his temper tantrums than I have his music.

You want a headline? Pitchfork gave his latest album a 10. Fact is Ye keeps making major contributions to his genre, pushing boundaries without losing the audience, and leaving a broad wake that changes what influencers do, and the impact reaches all sorts of cultural platforms. Say what you want about what he has to do to himself to live on the cutting edge of his craft, but he harnesses the crazy in album after album of hot fire. You don’t get “George Bush Doesn’t Like Black People” without a little “And Imma let you finish.” You don’t get the dreams, the beautiful dark twisted fantasies, without the arrogance steaming them. He’s experimenting. Give the guy his cred, and let him keep going about it.

CK, I disagree with you. He is losing his audience, because he lost me. I bought every single other Kanye West album on the day they were released. His antics have turned me off, and I don’t want my money to go supporting such behavior.

There is Dylan.. and then “everyone else”.. Kanye is just a member of the “everyone else”

No, I appreciate Kanye West’s music. He has the most intellectual, creative wordplay of any rapper of my generation. He isn’t all about the typical rap music flair. Who else samples from Manfred Mann Earth Band, The Turtles, Backyard Heavies, King Crimson, etc.? His personal antics don’t alter my opinion of him because I am a lover of music and I’m non-judgmental. What he says or does doesn’t affect my life or the beauty and soul of his music.
