Berlin’s Camera Work was founded in 1997 as a showcase for vintage and contemporary photography. Named after Alfred Stieglitz’s legendary magazine “Camera Work,” the gallery maintains a collection of vintage prints by Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Dorothea Lange, Irving Penn, and others, as well as an archive of memorabilia related to President Kennedy and his extended family. Contemporary photographers include Nick Brandt, Steven Klein, and Martin Schoeller, whose 2003 photo of Angelina Jolie is pictured here.

Nice story, you listed some good gallery programs that deserve attention, but, I think you totally missed the mark on this if you were looking to list the 10 most currently important photo galleries.
When it comes to Art Photography the New York Galleries TOTALLY LEAD this industry worldwide.
- Howard Greenberg Gallery
- Pace/MacGill Gallery
- Julie Saul Gallery
- Bonni Benrubi Gallery
- Bruce Silverstein Gallery
- Robert Mann Gallery
- Laurence Miller Gallery
- The Aperture Foundation
Plus – Matthew Marks Gallery, Cheim & Reed Gallery, Sean Kelly Gallery, and The David Zwirner Gallery all have important photo programs among there other great artists. All of these are NYC Based!
Of course, but if we had chosen the group you suggest, which is a good selection, we would have never gotten out of New York. The idea was to wander beyond our base to discover galleries that show great photography and have strong websites that can bring their artists and exhibition to our desktops.
Incredible images & good to see global spread of galleries. (Trivia: doesn’t Lady Di lookalike resemble Sigourney Weaver?)
Great list! I love the way you guys do your homework.
I’d forgotten about Alison Jackson though. Is she still doing these comedy lookalikes? Talk about stretching a novelty idea into a career… Good for her, I guess.
@Mike I never knew NYC was the epicenter of the world…
this was a good read – definitely informative.
These galleries represent the same types of photography.
Commercial / Celebrity and essentially boring photographs. If you look at the most influential photographers today
they’re represented by art galleries. Not these money hungry photo galleries that care nothing but prestige and wealth. These institutions are the main problem with photography and it’s upsetting that photo will never get to be called art because of this mechanical way of thinking!
Peter, you obviously didn’t pay much attention to the details. Many of the photography galleries listed and linked represent photographers that also show at art galleries. For example, Katy Grannan shows with Fraenkel and Salon 94 and Pieter Hugo shows with Yossi Milo and Shoshana Wayne Gallery. Photography is most definitely considered an art form and these galleries work hard to place the work of their artists in public collections. Beyond that, you seem to have missed the point of the article: It’s the World’s 10 Best Photography Galleries, not the World’s 10 Best Art Galleries Showing Photography.
Hello, you should also consider the first Italian Museum of photography, Alinari, located in Florence, Italy http://www.mnaf.it which host photo exhibitions and a great museum about the history of photography from 1839 until today, with a special section to help blind visitors to appreciate photography as well (tactile and braille support).
One of the best collections in North America is right in New Orleans.
A Gallery for Fine Photography established in 1973 by Joshua Mann Pailet.

The finest photography gallery in the country in terms of quality, quantity and aesthetic significance is the Andrew Smith Gallery in Santa Fe, NM. Nearly everything there will have far greater lasting power than nearly all the flamboyant and often silly pictures chosen here.

LOL Ansel Adams. Sorry but “nearly everything there” belongs in the history books and not everyone is still stuck in the Stone Age.
