A Fantasy Tour of Fake Cities We Wish Were Real

Many films, TV shows, and books are set in real places, from Edith Wharton’s New York to Drew Carey’s Cleveland. Others take place in generic cities (Metropolis) or fake places you’d never want to visit (Sin City). But, reading Juliet Lapidos’s thoughtful analysis of Leslie Knope’s politics on Parks and Recreation at Slate, it occurred to us that there are a whole lot of fictional towns we’d love to visit — including Pawnee. Our top ten are after the jump.

Pawnee, Indiana

Here’s how much Pawnee, IN wants to be a real city: It has its own, adorably lo-fi website that comes up before the real city of Pawnee, OK when you Google “Pawnee.” Sure, it is supposedly the epicenter of America’s obesity crisis. But it’s also home to a wonderful yearly Harvest Festival, a handful of hilarious bars, and the hardest-working person in government, one Leslie Knope. From Tom Haverford’s grating poseurism to April Ludgate’s dead-eyed apathy to Ron Swanson’s rugged libertarianism, Pawnee’s parks department boasts a delightful assortment of entertaining personalities. If you can judge a city by its government employees, then who wouldn’t want to spend a day (if not a lifetime) in the real Pawnee?

Pawnee City, Nebraska is a real city and the fake city also shows up before this one

Cicely, Alaska is the only fictional place I have ever seen on the screen where I actually wished I lived there. (Northern Exposure)

I was so glad to see Stars Hollow on this list. Love It!

Riverdale is in the Bronx

Hill Valley circa 1955!

Lake Woebegone has been in existence for 30 years now. I understand that AAA had to put on their maps and note that there is no such place as Lake Woebegone. Of course there are no pictures since it is only on radio.

Twin Peaks for sure, and all the apartments that ever existed in new york city on tv

there are many many towns named pawnee..oklahhoma, kansas, ohio, illinois..in tribute to or stolen from the great nation of pawnee

I'd like to visit Dibley, myself.

You think Cicely dated you? I was hoping for Lake Woebegone.

I want to go to Cicely, Alaska, from "Northern Exposure." (yes, I've just dated myself) We in Indiana have a running debate on both Pawnee and Orson, the Indiana town where "The Middle" takes place. We think Pawnee is more like Lafayette than Terre Haute (although Leslie on P&R once made mention of going to Lafayette like it's a bigger city than Pawnee), and Orson is perhaps like Bedford. But their geography on TM is a bit mixed up--in real-Indiana, in contrast to TV-Indiana, vast flat fields of corn do not coexist with limestone quarries in the same part of the state.

I wish Pleasantville was real, maybe with a wall switch to turn the color on and off.

Know what fantasy town I want to visit? The New York City that appears in all movies and TV shows where writers and other folks of average salaries live in gigantic apartments with lots of sun, closets, just a few feet away from wonderful shops and cafes and the subway. That place sounds amazing!

Glad to see I'm not the only one that hoped to Twin Peaks on the list

totally agree about twin peaks! my friend who lives in indy said that terr-haute is the closet thing to a real-life pawnee. but if there's no ron swanson then i ain't going.

I would love to visit the quaint little seaside town of Port Isaac, Cornwall the setting of Doc Martin.

Twin Peaks should definitely be added to this list.
