Love ’em or hate ’em, Black Flag is one of the most important bands in punk and hardcore history. Though it’s fashionable in some circles to disparage fearsome frontman Henry Rollins for his macho persona, we think he he was instrumental in making the band what it is, his anti-hipster sentimentalities not withstanding. Yesterday, Rollins tweeted that director Dave Markey’s road documentary about the last Black Flag tour, “Reality 86’d,” was available for streaming online. The documentary, originally released in 1991, focuses on Black Flag’s final tour before their breakup, supporting the album In My Head . With its gritty footage (shot on Super 8), legendary live performances, and scenes of the band pontificating about what chicks like and what reality is, it’s an awesome, nostalgic peek at Black Flag and the 80’s underground rock scene they embodied.
