10 Songs That Should Never Be Covered Again

Nirvana — “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (1991)

Definitive cover version: Patti Smith (2007)

While we’re on guys who committed suicide only to have the next generation plunder their angst, how about Kurt Cobain? If this collection of terrible “Smells Like Teen Spirit” covers isn’t enough to convince you that the song needs to be retired for its own protection, then we don’t know what is. Of course, rules don’t apply to Patti Smith, who recorded a twangy, meditative version that includes some lyrics she wrote. This is instructive: If you’re going to re-appropriate a song that criticizes groupthink, it’s probably wise to add something of your own to it.

Jeff Buckley really did great interpretation of Hallelujah, thats Hallelujah!

Mia Martini made a good Italian cover of Big Yellow taxi ... (I just wanted to remember a great Italian singer :) )

Mark S. and (especially) Dresden are absolutely correct re Hallelujah.

Good list, though not consistent in that some of the covers are highly regarded and some slagged. Have been thinking about cover versions since seeing Bon Iver butcher Leon Russell's "A Song For You" on Fallon last week. That song needs to be retired, with Ray Charles having the definitive cover. Speaking of Leon Russell, his cover of Jumping Jack Flash rules and that can be put on the shelf as well. Iron and Wine's cover of "Such Great Heights" is pretty inspired. Ellie Goulding's cover of Elton's "Your Song" is atrocious, as is every song Rod Stewart's ever covered.

@Monty - um, no it's not. If you're going to call someone "fucking retarded", at least do a quick Google search to make sure you're getting your facts right. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/(I_Can%27t_Get_No)_Satisfaction

The Rolling Stones covered 'Satisfaction.' It's an Otis Redding song. You must be fucking retarded.

Heard Freq Nasty's version of Kiss's 'I Was Made For Loving You'? Brilliant. There's a fab slow jazz version of 'Rock the Casbah' around that is way cool, and just recently I heard a great rendition of Blondie's 'Rapture' done by Erasure(? - not sure). All three tracks are phat and deserved of the same status as the original tunes. I think!?!

Hallelujah has become the new Moondance, which should have been top of your list

I've always been surprised that, in all the articles I've read about Joy Division, none seems to point out that "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is a response to Captain and Teneille's "Love Will Keep Us Together."

I agree with all of these except American Pie. Madonna did the definitive cover of that song?

Please don't overlook Alanis Morissette covering "My Humps." Best thing she ever did.

"Piece of My Heart" by Janis Joplin. No one else ever needs to record this—especially not Faith Hill, but really not anyone else. It only reminds us that no one can match Joplin.

agree with all of them except "Love will tear us apart". to my opinion, the definitive cover is the one from José Gonzalez...

While I appreciate your pointing out things like The Crickets' original version of "I Fought The Law", your list still missed some very important facts: * My Way's lyrics were written by Paul Anka and set to music based on the French song "Comme d'habitude" composed in 1967 by Claude François and Jacques Revaux. * Don McLean has had more than one hit. For instance, "Vincent (Starry Starry Night)" still remains a classic. He also wrote "And I Love Her So" which was covered by Perry Como. *Speaking of an Otis Redding omission, what about "Respect"? After it was covered by Aretha, SHOULD another cover be attempted? And on the subject of Soul, has there ever been ANY other song with more HIT covers that could beat "I Heard It Through The Grapevine"? From the vastly different original by Gladys Knight, thru Marvin, CCR, and Roger & Zapp....come ON!!!

I'd only heard "Big Yellow Taxi" as a Counting Crows song and didn't even know it's by Joan Mitchell originally. At any rate, it didn't make me dislike the song much less, though yes, I prefer to hear Mitchell's voice and orchestration to CC's, ugh.

John Cale's version of Hallelujah is by far the definitive one, he outright steals the song from Cohen.

i agree with the others about otis redding's cover of satisfaction. the other version i really like is when pj harvey covered it with bjork... youtube it!

@Jeff - but Hallelujah IS a religious song. It's just not Guy With A Beard Upstairs religious. Listen to Cohen's other work; for him, sex is sacred is religious.

The original is always better than any cover.

SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT. the fact that it happened by mylie cyrus made me throw up in my mouth a little.

Oh, and the Fall recorded a great cover of "Strychnine" as well!

No need for any more "Mr. Pharmacist" covers. The Fall did the definitive cover in 1986 on the Bend Sinister album.

Tori's 'Teen Spirit' is perfect, sad and beauiful. Don't you dare leave The Red Head out of this!

Who died and made you the new Commander In Chief of the Music Police? Music lives and breaths on it's own once it's out in the world... People play it, buy it, steal it, download it, perform it, record it, and cover it... that's how musicians and music evolve. Even as an excercise in opinion this article is pretentious, stupid and as full of itself as some of the covers you're shittting on.

What about "Spin Me 'Round"? Terrible.

didn't realize this would show up on one thread. tori amos comment is regarding smells like teen spirit. (agreeing with Saranden, previous comment)

tori amos has a way better cover, sorry, screw this banjo joke. i'm a smith lover too. but she does nothing new with the song. that's not a cover, that's a rip off.

Hate to tell you hipsters Joy Division is not a hipster band so how could it be that Bono recording it gives him hipster cred? I love how hipsters take credit for music that came out before they were born.

What kills me about people covering Hallelujah is that they think it's really a religious song... you can always tell by the reverence in which they sing it without knowing what they are saying. Kills me...

None of these choices gives me the overwhelming nausea I have felt each of the countless times I've walked into a public park, or a party, or a bar, and heard a scraggly rendition of The Rolling Stones' "Dead Flowers". Not only was Mick Jagger ill-suited to sing country music in the first place, but hearing Americans imitate his British imitation of a Southern drawl is more than I can bear. Please stop!

The Clash version of "I Fought the Law" is OK, but it pales next to the original.

That Swans version of "Love will tear us apart" was utterly pointless.

Kinda odd that the most covered song of all time (if you go by the Guinness Book of World Records), "Yesterday", didn't make this list.

Downtown Train by Tom Waits. The unassuming public think it is a Rod Stewart song. Also covered by Patti Smyth, EBTG, amongst others.

'Smells Like Teen Spirit' by Paul Anka rocks like bad carpeting at a Holiday Inn, though Pat Boone's version of 'Smoke on the Water' is a close second. Then there is Richard Cheese.....

best cover of "satisfaction" is otis redding off of the live in europe album. to me, at least. i agree with all of this!

you left off 'Mack the Knife' by Bobby Darin. uncoverable.

Best cover versions of both Hallelujah and Love Will Tear Us Apart belong to Susanna and the Magical Orchestra [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJQkLF1sSuQ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHhVydgvuAc respectively]

Fleetwood Mac's Landslide?

You Are My Sunshine should have ended with Cash.

'My Way' jesus, am I the only person who wants to slit there wrists when this thing pops up. karaoke? kill me with a knife, please, not thru my earholes. At this juncture it rates right up there with car alarms.

Definitely cannot agree with Hallelujah version. I think Jeff Buckley's version is just beyond perfection. He is the exception to the rule that original interpreters are the best.

Hmmm . . . I think Tori Amos's version of SLTS should be mentioned. It gives the song an even sader and more eerie feel.

No Along The Watchtower by Hendrix? Wonderwall by Ryan Adams? Ordinary People by William Shatner? These are all covers better than the original. The Tori Amos version of Smells Like Teen Spirit is better than the Patti Smith version.

I could not believe that you did not include Otis Redding in this list for his version of Satisfaction. You have got to be kidding me.
