A Brief Survey of Ridiculous Anti-Drug Propaganda

Yesterday, the Global Commission on Drug Policy, a high-level group that’s been studying drug usage and policing around the world, came to the somewhat unshocking conclusion that the war on drugs has utterly failed “with devastating consequences for individuals and societies around the world.” Not only has the decades-long war cost world governments untold trillions of dollars, it has taken the lives of countless people, innocent and guilty alike, all while doing nothing to stop the global spread of illegal drugs. The comission, which includes former international presidents, U.S. Secretaries of State and Federal Chiefs, recommended that we simply stop fighting, legalize marijuana at the very least, and experiment with the legalization and regulation of other drugs.

In celebration of this news, we present you with a some of the best (and worst) anti-drug propaganda the media has to offer. We hope that future drug education takes on a tone that is less about fear-mongering and more about providing real facts, but while we wait for that to happen, we may as well laugh at the absurdity of these campaigns.

The 1960s was a wonderful time for anti-drug propaganda. The establishment, losing the deathgrip of conformity that was easily maintained in the ’50s, felt seriously threatened by the rising tide of counterculture, and they prepared plenty of PSAs to prove what kind of threats it posed. This one is especially convincing. It tells the tale of a woman tragically seduced into trying LSD, who now has to live forever with the guilt of murdering the father of a family of hot dogs.

You think it's funny? That hotdog was my father, and I had to grow up with my 6 hotdog brothers and sisters in a single parent family.

The LSD video is "Copyright Lockheed Aircraft Corporation". WTF?

we live in a chemical universe, any attempt to stop the ingestion of any mind body or soul altering substance is futile... the war on drugs failed, but mainly because it is a cover for drug smuggling and using drugs to control populations... all substances should be legal, cigarettes is the classic example of an extremely dangerous substance that kills. but I guess when uncle ernie dies of lung cancer thats less horrible then the next guy who dies from a drug overdose. Like I said all drugs should be legal, they should have drug enhanced sports and drug free sports and forget putting people in jail for drugs and fill the jails with corporate boards that allow all types of industrial pollution, from arsenic in gold mining, to fracking for coal, or leaky nuclear power plants... loved the drug videos but remember kids, always take mind altering substances with a designated experience driver drug officianato

haven't motor vehicles killed more people than drugs? i know many people using cannabis, lsd, mescaline and psilocybin for over forty years and never had a problem. they have only had their lives enhanced!!

Not that cigarettes are on the same level as crack, etc., but they are, technically, a drug too. In that vein, this list misses one of the BEST anti-drug messages of all time. I'll remember the line "R2, do you really think I don't have a heart..."for the rest of my life. Cheesy as hell, yet kind of moving:

they once thought to try giving registered users heroin in Australia as a way to try and clean up the problems in the capital as a test for a countrywide free/cheap heroin program. its an interesting idea as it would kill the crime rate (long term users will not need to steal). the heroin would be clean and they would receive and return fresh needles at a local facility. this would kill the dealers money making potential. and as you kill the market for the dealers they produce no new "customers" by turning people to a life of shit. might take a little time (more time than a high level politicians career) to change. but then the immediate changes of safety to the public is different and not just a band aid to the overall problem.

"Belochka" stands for "white heat"

The war on drugs kills WAY more people than drugs ever have. Almost every drug death other than deliberate suicide is caused by lack of labels and regulation.

@Josh, sorry bro. But cannabis never killed a single human being, ever. You'd be better served to preach against caffeine. Or sugar. Drugs are man-made, and lethal. Real MEDICINE is NATURAL, and NON-TOXIC. Furthermore, you already have Cannabinoid Receptors in your brain, BY NATURE, so NOT using them is UNNATURAL. There are no mistakes, at least not in this Universe, so stimulating your natural receptors with the natural substance meant to do so is IN YOUR NATURE. Humans have an ancient, symbiotic relationship with the cannabis plant. Learn it, live it, love it. It's there for a REASON. #RealityBomb

they shoulda added the ninja turtle anti-pot PSA lmfaoooo

The attention of the world is upon the failures of the war on drugs. We all have the same objective, to reduce the harms associated with drug abuse. We think the best way to accomplish this goal is to treat drug abuse as a matter of public health, not a matter of criminal justice. Support groups like Law Enforcement Against Prohibition and bring an end to the war on drugs.

"We hope that future drug education takes on a tone that is less about fear-mongering and more about providing real facts, but while we wait for that to happen, we may as well laugh at the absurdity of these campaigns." A worthwhile dream, but a forlorn hope, as long as we keep electing people like Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Obama.

Let's not forget the "Ooh Meth" video" please. Possibly the least worthwhile anti-drug commercial. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oT2k-6bfbD4 I love this... so I really love this drug too, I guess.

"and thats when i became a.... vegetarian" du du du daahhh... One thing this film does is remind me of how much I Love troll dolls. Takes me back to my pre-LSD youth. As far as Drugs go --- they can be bad, not so bad, or amazingly good. As Jim said... the legal ones are sometimes far worse. I actually know a young girl who completely "freaked out" on acid and did some totally insane things at a camp site one night- quite noisily. A sheriff just happened by at that moment. A long story ensued including jail and a felony charge for another girl who had one lousy pill of something. The girl who freaked out? She's at Harvard now.. full ride. Go Sophie- Your writing is awesome. ; )

@Jim Thanks for your comment.

Any unnecessary, early death is a tragedy. As someone who as lost close relatives to alcoholism, however, I object to the fact that deaths from illegal drugs seem to be viewed as somehow worse or more tragic than deaths caused by legal ones. The irony being, of course, that many illegal drugs are actually much less harmful than the major legal ones. The legalisation of most illegal drugs followed by the production of pharmaceutically pure drugs and their prescription and use under supervision would be a social revolution. Once recreational drugs are legal, pharmaceutical companies will rush to produce better drugs with fewer side effects and people will probably gravitate to those and away from the truly harmful drugs like alcohol and tobacco. This needs to happen and soon.

The War on Drugs failed Billions of dollars ago! This money could have been used for outreach programs to clean up the bad end of drug abuse by providing free HIV testing, free rehab, and clean needles. Harmless drugs like marijuana could be legalized to help boost our damaged economy. Cannabis can provide hemp for countless natural recourses and the tax revenue from sales alone would pull every state in our country out of the red! Vote Teapot, PASS IT, and legalize it. @Josh – yes, absolutely agree with what Sophie said, and I'm also sorry to hear about your loss. And for what it's worth, I agree with you that drugs are indeed a waste of time. However, I also think that decades of governmental strategies of criminalising users have been at best ineffective and at worst actively counter-productive in preventing people using them.

@Josh - That's horrible, I'm so sorry. In no way trying to minimize your loss. Drugs can be anything from alcohol to prozac to heroin, and it's sad that so many people have given their lives because of addiction that was not treated, overdose, and the international drug wars that have been raging for years, which obviously have not stopped the spread of drugs. It's an incredibly complex and important issue, one that it's impossible to have a black or white opinion on.

@Tom - My parents taught me to stay away from drugs. I payed attention, my brother didn't, and now he's dead.

@Josh - so is trying to prevent people from taking them.

Real facts? Drugs are a waste of time.

YESSSSSSSSSS to Brass Eye. That whole show was genius, but that episode was particularly great. "One girl threw up her own pelvis bone." (The pedophilia episode was amazing, too - particularly convincing Phil Collins to wear a hat with the slogan "I'm Talking Nonce-Sense".)
