If last night’s rather bland MTV Video Music Awards had a highlight for us, then it was Lady Gaga’s commitment to appearing throughout the entire show as her male alter ego, Jo Calderone, with minimal slip ups. For someone who loves costume changes as much as she does, making that decision had to have been a struggle. Not that we’re totally in love with the persona — frankly, he reminds us way too much of Max Casella (aka Vinnie from Doogie Howser) in The Newsies — but at least Gaga, unlike many of the evening’s performers, did something that was both surprising and memorable. That said, her theatrical opener (particularly the rambling monologue portion) definitely didn’t go over as well with some famous audience members as it did others.
