Recently Uncovered Photos from the Sinking Titanic

Newlyweds John and Nelle Snyder were spending their honeymoon aboard the Titanic when the iceberg struck and sank the much-mythologized giant. They were the lucky ones, catching the first of the rescue boats. It left half-full, with stubborn first class passengers watching on, refusing to leave the ship over what they were sure were minor technical mishaps. Spotted at Peta Pixel, these shots of the rescue ships, the ice-chunk-ridden sea and quite possibly that fated iceberg, all snapped the morning after the sinking, were kept in the Snyder family for 99 years. Incredibly, these few photographs and the couples’ letters on the Titanic stationary fetched an unbelievable $100,570 at Philip Weiss Auctions just the other day. See these amateur, rare and historic images after the jump.
