Score one for smart little girls who love books: Roald Dahl’s beloved Matilda is slated to hit Broadway in 2013. The show comes to the US via Britain’s Royal Shakespeare Company, which debuted Matilda: The Musical in Starford-upon-Avon in 2010 before upgrading to London’s West End in October. Directed by Matthew Warchus and written by Dennis Kelly — both best known for their witty adult fare — and featuring songs by cultish comedian Tim Minchin, the show has been both a commercial and a critical success in England. In a review last month, Ben Brantley of The New York Times called Matilda: The Musical “a sweet and sharp-witted work of translation, which — like its story-spinning title character — turns dark and sodden anxieties into bright and buoyant fantasies.” Well, we’re sold.
