Keith Richards was apparently famous for 20 years before he did a network TV interview — and considering the drug-dependent antics he describes in his memoir, Life, it’s probably a good thing he stayed away from prime-time for the duration of the ’70s. By the time he appeared on an American show called Friday Night Videos in 1984, Richards came across as significantly more coherent, despite his singular posture and a somewhat silly bar backdrop. In the clip below, spotted by Dangerous Minds, he reminisces about meeting Mick Jagger, becoming an instant teen idol, and laments John Lennon’s murder with an earnestness you might not necessarily associate with Richards if you haven’t read his book.
