I lived in the house just to the right of 59 (63)from about 1968 to 1973. I happened to be friends with the owner's granson. Back then, the house was a showpiece. That is until they decided to put that ridiculous brown aluminum siding on it. I remember when the were doing it. Went from those beautiful old wooden scalloped shingles to that ugly brown shake siding. The interior was another story. I never got beyond the second floor, but what I do remember is that it was immaculately kept, and had most of the original woodwork. I think what's left there is the result of owners stripping out all that original work and making a quick profit off it. (You'd be surprised that some of that goes for.) I really hope someone buys this piece of history (rumored to have been built by Peter Cooper) and restores it to it's original glory.

I used to live 2 blocks from this house (I now live five) and I've been in love with it ever since I've laid eyes on it. I was half-excited and half-terrified when the FOR SALE sign came down and plywood walls went up around it, hoping someone would restore it but fearing someone would just tear it down. But beyond putting boards over the windows and doors, nothing much happened. I really do hope someone with the right intentions scoops this up and restores it right. It's a really fantastic-looking property and could be very majestic. As for all the previous posts saying its in some far off corner of Williamsburg -- the house is only 4.5 blocks from the Graham L stop, right down the street from Cooper Park.

I love Gondry! His part of Tokyo! was surreal yet humane, just really, truly incredible.

Check out the DVD (just released) and the trailer here: http://bit.ly/TokyoTheMovie
