The Most Beautiful Outdoor Theaters in the World

Minack Theatre — Cornwall, England

Appropriately situated a few miles from Land’s End in Cornwall, England, Minack Theatre certainly wins the award for most stunning location. As legend has it, after local villagers staged Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in a local meadow, a Miss Rowena Cade offered her seaside garden as a more suitable location. Miss Cade and her gardener “made a terrace and rough seating, hauling materials down from the house or up via the winding path from the beach below. In 1932, The Tempest was performed with the sea as a dramatic backdrop, to great success.”

i sat in that place for hours just stunned... its so beautiful.

I would add the Stern Grove Festival Amphitheater to your list, by renowned landscape architect Lawrence Halprin

Its very inspiring to be in the company of so many brilliant designs. Thank you, Flavorwire! But I'd like to clear up a misconception about the Hollywood Bowl. The new shell which HplusF designed is approximately 1.5 times the size of the Allied Architects shell, which it replaced. So although it is interesting historically that the Allied Shell preceded the current shell, it would only be fair to say that we respected the iconic nature of the Bowl in our new structure, yet had vastly different goals and functional requirements, which prompted the creation of the acoustic halo and the speaker towers.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing!

I love three of this list. Minack Theater and Morrison Theater. I think, both are compose perfectly. It's like the sourronding area were built too by the man or the theaters by the nature. I would like to watch any work there!!! The other outdoor theater that I like is the Wolp Trop. It's gorgeous. And a question: The Cloud Tower Vienna, doesn't look like a Picasso piano? At the end, the New York theatre...I have no words!!!

Berkeley California's Greek Theatre is quite beautiful too...

I'm surprised Ravinia wasn't included -- http://backstage.ravinia.org/ravinia-gallery/views-of-the-park/ The feel of the place is far better than the Hollywood Bowl to me. Perhaps this list was based on how things look in a photograph?

It's hard to narrow down the choices but as far as intimate outdoor spaces are concerned, how can you ignore the Ford Amphitheatre (1,200 seats) in Hollywood? You feel cradled in the lush landscape. www.fordtheatres.org

OBTW, I've seen Shakespeare performed on the grounds of the Gundlach-Bundschu winery in Sonoma. Not really a full-fledged amphitheater, more of a lawn, but still, it was fun.

Don't know how you could have left out the Santa Fe Opera? You haven't lived 'til you've seen an opera with a real thunderstorm or a bloody sunset as a backdrop. Another thing you failed to take into consideration is all the wonderful ancient amphitheaters. The ancient Greek theater in Taormina, Sicily is partly ruins, but they're still producing theater there, with Mt. Etna smoking in the background.

I totally agree with Marina leo: the ancient theater of Epidaurus (has been around only 2.500 years) and the theater of Herod Atticus in Athens (this one is only 2.300 years old) are two of the most breathtaking open theatres in the world

Chicago's Millennium I would say is up there as well... http://www.google.com/search?q=millenium+Park+Pritzker+Theater&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&oe=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=-_bYT7uSIo-w8AT8kqTQAw&biw=1167&bih=735&sei=A_fYT8-2G4uQ8wS55sm2Aw

I was also surprised not to see the Gorge.

I agree that the Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago should have been in this list way before the Hollywood Bowl. You should always ask me before you put together these lists.

Sorry guys, Verona has the most spectacular theater. Saw Aida there, sat on pink marble, divine.

Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA

That bandshell in Portugal *is* cute, but the Gorge at George, WA is more picturesque!

The Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago should be on this list. It may not be to everyone's taste but you can't deny that it's striking.

I must second a few of the above readers' comments and add a few of my own. It's just crazy and almost irresponsible to not include the Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago's Millenium Park, The Delacorte Theater in NYC's Central Park, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus Amphitheatre in Greece, the two adjacent hilltop greek amphitheaters in Lyon, France (home of Les Nuits do Fourviere Festival), the greek amphitheater in Vienne, France (home of the Jazz a Vienne Festival, and at 10,000 capacity the largest remaining intact Greek amphitheater in the world), the Gorge Amphitheater in George, Washington (no kidding), and finally the Roman Theater in Carcassonne, France (the oldest largest fully intact medieval city in the world). And to mention the Highline in NYC in the context of outdoor theaters is just ludicrous, and speaks to the narcissism of the writer.

The bandshell in Vondel Park, Amsterdam, is on par with the one shown from Porto. I'm not sure either belongs on the same list with the other beauties shown here, though. I need to check a few of these off my list!

The High Line spot is hardly at "theater" no matter what they call it. A better NYC choice would have been the Delacorte, where "Shakespeare in the Park" has been held for the past 50 years.

I think u should visit greece.........the most beautiful ancient theaters of the world.....and not only one or two........ http://www.google.gr/search?q=%CE%B1%CF%81%CF%87%CE%B1%CE%B9%CE%BF+%CE%B8%CE%B5%CE%B1%CF%84%CF%81%CE%BF+%CE%B5%CF%80%CE%B9%CE%B4%CE%B1%CF%85%CF%81%CE%BF%CF%85&hl=el&client=firefox-a&hs=d9l&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=hW3YT_GcBcTU8gPCtqiHAw&ved=0CF4QsAQ&biw=1333&bih=608 http://www.ancientgreece.com/s/Theatre/

I can't believe my eyes! These are undoubtedly beautiful theaters but how could you have left out the Ancient Theater of Epidauraus and/or the Theater of Herod Atticus in Athens??? The Greek Theater in Sicily should have surely led you to list the originals, no?

Cloud Tower by the next ENTERprise — Vienna, Austria - Is soooo ugly...who is writing this?

There's no way that the Hollywood Bowl should make this list and the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park in Chicago shouldn't.

Can't believe you left out the St. Louis Municipal Opera- part of beautiful Forest Park designed by Olmstead. It's been a summer theater for over like 80 years. I think it was even part of the design for the 1904 World's Fair. Shouldn't have been left out.

I should add that Regents Park change the stage for every single production. I've seen a set made to look like a giant sparkly piano, the ewok village (Sondheim's Into the Woods), a post-apocalyptic burn-out (Macbeth), and a turn of the century dept store. The bar is where you get the magical fairylights experience.
