The 20 Most Beautiful Museums in the World

[Editor's note: It's Labor Day, so your devoted Flavorwire team is taking a break. To keep you entertained, we're leaving you with our most popular features of the summer months. This post originally ran July 7th.]
This week, we were blown away by this gorgeous concept for a “spiral garden museum” in Taipei, which sadly didn’t make it into the final round of the design competition and thus will never become a reality. Though we’re disappointed, the project reminded us of the gloriously beautiful museums that already exist in our wide world, so to bind our wounds over the Taipei garden museum (and to indulge in a little architecture candy) we’ve collected twenty of the most lovely here. After all, what better way to store and display some of the world’s greatest artwork than in a structure as well-designed and beautiful as the art itself? Click through to see our picks for the most beautiful museums from all over the world, and if we’ve missed your favorite — or if the Guggenheim makes you gag — let us know which ones you’d choose in the comments!

The biggest and most famous museum in the world - in London, New York and Paris actually have nothing their. Excuse me but all of the pictures, statues and treasures there were stolen and brought there. No offence, but show me the French art in the Louvre!

When I think of museums, I think of history, art, education. I guess there is something to be said for the architect of museums.

Such a bizarre list. It should be titled: "20 Interesting or Odd Museums Selected at Random."

The Hirshhorn (and the sculpture gardens) in DC is worth noting

i totally agree with imperial war museum north. it was one of the best -as a building and as an exhibition.

Nice list. I've always thought the architecture of Moshe Safdie's National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa is stunning as well -- and on a quiet day the acoustic effect of high heels on the main staircase inside reminds me of the meditative sound of falling rain.

I'm going to be a little provincial here but in area with plenty of fabulous museums both from and architectural and content perspective I would add the MFA in Boston, The Isabella Stewart Gardner (old and new wings), The ICA in Boston and the Peabody/Essex Museum in Salem, MA, all of which are world class institutions in great buildings, some with fine recent additions. And that's not even the tip of the iceberg here.

What a great selection. Of course we all have our 'favourites' for different reasons. I love the Natural History Museum in Vienna (on the list), but one museum I really enjoy visiting is the National Museum in Bangkok, not necessarily because it is beautiful to look at, rather its beauty lies for me in it being such a tranquil haven in the middle of a chaotic city, with fantastic artworks for a SEA art historian to enjoy.

The idea is great but one needs to know each museum to accept this ranking. For instance, one of the MON (Curitiba, Brasil) pictures is misleading: it shows people's size smaller than real in relation to the building size..

I remember watching a documentary on the extensions made to the ROM. It was fascinating but after seeing the sheer ego behind it all, on the part of the then Director but more so from the architect, i can't find myself liking the building

The Mon of southern Brazil, in the beautiful city of Curitiba (Oscar Niemeyer Museum), I met and marveled at the space and organization of exhibition halls, it is very much worth the visit and be among the 20 most beautiful museums museums world.

Curitiba, Brazil is big and beautiful

Melhor museu do mundo se chama Oscar Niemeyer, no qual foi em homenagem a um dos maiores arquitetos.

Alfred Barr, the director of MOMA, said that the Museo Del Arte Abstracto, in the "Hanging Houses" of Cuenca, was the most beautiful art museum in the world. http://www.flickr.com/photos/andrewmac/4068120556/

A very nice list, for sure! You included some gorgeous historic ones combined with new, progressive work, which is so great, bravo! You have a great eye for architecture, don't be afraid to list the architects, as you clearly already know! The other suggestions prior are right on too. I have a few personal favorites not included ... Rodin museum in Paris is not on the same scale as the others [it is smaller] - but a total gem. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is also gorgeous, and and so fun to visit; it's easy to get happily lost in there, and then go have a drink on the roof looking out over the city :). The Mercedes museum in Stuttgart is also fantastic, approaching the feel of the Guggenheim in New York [only - out of concrete, and awesomely devoted to cars, with a retro spaceship-type elevator]. Museo Reina Sofia has a contemporary Nouvel addition; in addition to its former building which was a hospital [with external glass elevators]. Santiago Calatrava's museum in Milwaukee has brise-soleil wings that go up and down; in addition to the most beautiful parking garage I have ever experienced [clerestory light, flawless construction, and a circular glass elevator that takes you to the main floor]; in addition to the gorgeous pedestrian bridge that spans a freeway taking you to another adjoining parking structure.

and I thought I was the only one that marveled at the parking garage in milwaukee.

Besides the Vatican, I think you forgot the Uffizi in Florence and the Egyptian Museum in Turin!

Patan Museum, of Patan, Kathmandu, Nepal. It's a historical museum, rather than an art museum, but it is beautiful.

Um...where is the Denver Art Museum in Denver, CO? The original building is fascinating, but the expansion is breathtaking.

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen, Denmark

The Serralves Museum (Museu Fundação Serralves) in Porto? A simple statement of beauty which does not compete with the art.

Agreed on the Miho (this art history major's most favorite museum experience, worth the trip - TWICE!), and the Chichu - but also on Naoshima the Benesse House Museum. If you can make it out there, the setting for the Sugimoto photos displayed outside is one of the most magical places in the world. Highly recommended, the entire island is true art party!

Obviously, all the 20th-century museums were chosen for their exteriors. Buildings exhibiting themselves, a phenomenon aka The Bilbao Effect. High among my own Top 20 is the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen (www.glyptoteket.com). You do need to go inside, though!

Why are the architects not identified? Did I miss it?

Typically Canadian to hate on their own. I think the ROM entrance is great. Granted it would have been more spectacular had it been all glass (as was originally intended), but it still manages to blend the new and old designs together effectively.

Chichu Art Museum. Nothing like it that i know of. Best way i've ever seen a Monet displayed too. Really allowed the artwork to speak for itself. http://www.benesse-artsite.jp/en/chichu/index.html

Nezu museum in Tokyo is stunning.Set in stunning grounds, a beautiful japanese garden, great modern architecture. Everything you want in a museum. Love it. Best one i've been to.

I'd say that the National History museum in London is an incredible building in itself, and the main hallway has been designed perfectly to remain in your retinas for years...

i can't believe the milwaukee art museum designed by calatrava did not make this list

The Miho in Shiga, Japan is the most beautiful museum in the world.

Louisiana in Denmark is a great museum with beautiful surroundings but Zara Hadid's extension for Odrupgaard Museum (close to Louisiana) from 2005 is also worth noticing...

No mention of the Kimbell, huh?

I think Emily needs a travel grant to the southern hemisphere, one our of 20 seems slightly biased and obviosuly she is smitten by Russia. Emily, you know there are museums in Africa too.

just like Patricia ! I am surprised you haven't thought about Venetian Museums ! The Doges' Palace ? Punta Della Dogana ? The Peggy Guggenheim's Collection on the Grand Canal ?

The Vatican is a serious omission, it is breathtakingly beautiful.

The Nelson - Oh, yes! With the new 'extension' - no way. Pity, really.

The Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg,South Africa gets my vote for the seriousness and quality of its exhibits.

hey ! how about the cloisters ?

the noguchi museum in long island city, new york-a beautiful oasis in the city...

The Kolumba in Cologne, Germany is missing as well. Poor exhibit, but the building is worth the trip. (the rest of Cologne - meh)

Quite a few of the good ones missing here, just one of them being the reconstruction of the Neue Museum in Berlin (a museum on an island solely dedicated to museums). The museum was partly destroyed in WWII and only now has been reconstructed by David Chipperfield. Nofretete/Nefertiti is exhibited there, but the old/new hallway gave me the shivers - amazing. Pictures don't do the building justice, you'll have to see for yourself. http://www.google.de/imgres?q=neues+museum+berlin&start=86&um=1&hl=de&client=firefox-a&sa=N&rls=org.mozilla:de:official&biw=1440&bih=737&addh=36&tbm=isch&tbnid=FLY4vACYzCXhtM:&imgrefurl=http://www.australiandesignreview.com/news/2049-chipperfield-wins-2011-mies-van-der-rohe-prize&docid=UDo5jnuTlliFfM&imgurl=http://www.australiandesignreview.com/wp-content/uploads/old_img/Chipperfield_Neues_Museum.jpg&w=638&h=358&ei=20D7T76vK4bBswb6womSBQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=610&vpy=456&dur=28&hovh=168&hovw=300&tx=103&ty=184&sig=116532874461160765936&page=5&tbnh=168&tbnw=235&ndsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:86,i:15

the exclusion of the neu national gallerie in berlin designed by mies van der rohe is a SERIOUS omission.

Come on Flavorpill get a passport and leave the US of NY and look around the world. What about Galerija Hest in Ljubljana? or the capsule collection in Astley Hall Chorley Lanc UK?
