The figures that appear in Alexandra Bellissimo’s Simulations series could be interpreted as the opposite of cyborgs: Rather than part-human, part-machine, they’re people fused with elements of the natural world. An outcropping of rock sits on atop a man’s head covering his eyes, while a woman’s arm becomes a gnarled tree branch. Shot both in black-and-white and color, the photo collages are calming and unsettling at the same time, bringing a tinge of drama to the communion between humans and nature.
