Photo Gallery: Joana Vasconcelos’ Breathtaking Versailles Takeover

As exhibitions by artists like Xavier Veilhan, Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami have proven in recent years, it takes a bold visionary to take on the Palace of Versailles. Through September 30th, you’ll find large, over-the-top sculptural works by Paris-born, Lisbon-based artist Joana Vasconcelos inhabiting the rooms and gardens of Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette’s ornate, wedding cake of a palace; from an incredible, oversized pair of sparkling high heels to a helicopter embellished with rhinestones and bright pink ostrich feathers, aesthetically, she certainly seems born for such a challenge.

Vasconcelos would tend to agree. “My work has developed around the idea that the world is an opera, and Versailles embodies the operatic and aesthetic ideal that inspires me,” she has explained. “The works that I propose exist for this place. I see them as linked to Versailles in a timeless way. When I stroll through the rooms of the palace and its gardens, I feel the energy of a setting that gravitates between reality and dreams, the everyday and magic, the festive and the tragic.” Click through our slideshow of highlights from the exhibition, and let us know in the comments if you too see this is as a perfect pairing.
