The 10 Most Influential Contemporary Hip Hop Producers

We’ve had a week to digest Until the Quiet Comes, the new Flying Lotus album, and to be honest it still kinda makes our head hurt. FlyLo’s roots lie in hip hop, but this album encompasses everything from weird electronic experimentalism to free jazz, making it the latest installment in a constantly fascinating (if sometimes impenetrable) body of work. These are exciting times for hip hop production — in a weird sort of paradox, while the state of hip hop MCing is largely dismal, the production side of things is more innovative and creative than ever. With the help of resident production whiz and Flavorpill associate Lyle Horowitz, we’ve selected a few of the producers we think are really pushing the creative envelope at the moment — who are your suggestions? (And we’re trying to focus on lesser-known artists here, so please don’t ask us why we haven’t included Kanye West.)

Flying Lotus

It’s interesting to note that today’s most lauded hip hop producer doesn’t really make beats for people to rap over. FlyLo’s own work is largely instrumental, and when he employs vocalists and/or produces for others, it’s usually vocalists whose styles have little to do with conventional hip hop styling — take Gonjasufi, for instance, or Thom Yorke (you may have heard of him). The producer’s style is instantly recognizable — lush, immersive, idiosyncratic, and very, very trippy.

hot beats free yall tell me if you like em and add me on twitter if u want

People that make unique beats that are truely outstanding like me arent getting any notice.

I've got to say Tom, I was pretty disappointed in this. You didn't include Madlib and I know it's a subjective list and all, but honestly that is just blasphemy.

For the clearly confused: I never said Pete Rock belonged on this particular list. I insinuated that I just really appreciate his work.

Other than Lex Luger, Noah Shelob and Mike Will Made It, none of the the producers here have had any significant influence. Most of them are just hipster shit for blogging white nerds. That doesn't mean they're not tight, but to say they are influential is laughable. Kanye West, Young Chop, Hit-Boy, Drumma Boy, AraabMuzik, Harry Fraud are all by far more influential than most of the producers mentioned.

harry fraud should be on this list

Hey hey! People should be happy. Pete Rock and other great producers dont belong on contemporary hip hop list! It would be disappointing to see them on a list with the likes of lex luger. Always read top 10 list titles carefully!

are you kidding me?? with producers like sounwave, exile, flying lotus and you're saying this is why hip hop sucks? Exile pretty much takes 90s production and shits on it!!!

lol @ calling people "purists" or "elitist" b/c they don't like spaced out stuff. Some people actually think trap beats suck. Minimalists electro sounds is not "moving forward". Exile, Flylo, and Casino are the only guys on this list I'm big on. Contemporary guys who I'd gladly rather listen to than half this list: Elaquent Freddie Joachim Suff Daddy Knxwledge Damu The Fudgemunk B. Lewis The Stuyvesants Infamous Reptar Constrobuz Teeko 14KT B.Bravo Ju-Ar Bugseed etc etc

Stop being a purist and accept some new shit into your life. Then maybe you could put someone on to Pete Rock and it would be all good. The point is to move forward, if everyone still sounded like Pete Rock in 2012 the game really would be dead.

This list should be renamed: "Why hip hop sucks outside the 90s"

I think I'll stick with Pete Rock. :) Stro Elliot and Boonie Mayfield are two I might add to this.
