For a song whose giant beat gets so much more attention than its minimalist lyrics, Rihanna’s “We Found Love” has a weird emotional resonance. That chorus, “We found love in a hopeless place,” could have been cut from an uncharacteristically positive Joy Division song. So it’s been especially interesting to watch different artists reinterpret the celebratory dance track’s dark undertones. Bat for Lashes’ Natasha Khan is the latest to sing “We Found Love,” as part of a BBC session with Zane Lowe. Although lucky UK readers can watch a video of the performance, Americans will have to settle for the audio stream. You can’t go wrong listening to the entire, two-hour program, but if you’re in a rush, the cover begins at roughly the hour-and-21-minute mark. In keeping with her own style, Khan slows down the tempo, strips out Calvin Harris’ tornado body-rush swirls, injects tortured emotion into the vocals, and focuses the beat on ponderous percussion. The result proves how versatile this hit really is. Listen here. [via Pitchfork]
