Between the release of their latest excellent album, Transcendental Youth, and a string of rapturously received New York gigs, the Mountain Goats have been very much on our minds this month. It’s a good thing we never get sick of John Darnielle, because he’s got another treat for us: TMG’s Daytrotter session is live! The four-song performance features beautiful versions of “In Memory of Satan,” “White Cedar,” and “Transcendental Youth,” all quieter tracks from the new album. But longtime Mountain Goats fans will really flip out over Darnielle’s intense, energetic rendition of The Sunset Tree’s “This Year.” For those of us who missed out on those live shows, this is the next best thing.
