In its suddenly somewhat successful attempt to regain an audience, NBC has tried to rip off many shows. The New Normal is its Modern Family; The Playboy Club, unfortunately, was supposed to be its Mad Men. But the network has apparently noticed how many of us are obsessed with Downton Abbey, and it looks like they’re doing this riff right: TV Line reports that Downton creator Julian Fellowes is developing The Gilded Age for NBC. As its title suggests the show will be set in 1880s New York, which Fellowes describes as “a vivid time with dizzying, brilliant ascents and calamitous falls, of record-breaking ostentation and savage rivalry; a time when money was king.” Sounds like just what we’ll need as a considerably-less-guilty pleasure, with New York wealth-porn standard Gossip Girl set to wrap next month.
