Fascinating Street Shots of Rodeo Drive Shoppers in the ’80s

You might know Anthony Hernandez for his beautiful landscape photography, but back in the ’80s the artist turned his lens on a rarefied subject: the shoppers of Beverly Hills. The resulting images — which mark the first time he had worked in color — provide a brilliant visual time capsule, full of big hair, cinched waists, and a few outfits that wouldn’t look too out of place in modern-day Bushwick. “I was trying to be invisible,” he has said. “I didn’t want the confrontations that come with taking more considered photographs.” Click through to check out a selection of photos, which can all be found in the recently published book Rodeo Drive, 1984.

In the early eighties, I enrolled in a 3-day cutting seminar with Sebastian Intl- VanNuys/ Tarzana. My masculine looking Instructor there was wearing the scent- "Lauren for Women" lol. I was impressed with the sign a Gucci announcing the Staff all at lunch 12:00 -1:00 so you'd know your Consultant would be there when you were except the lunch hour. I had to check my camera entering Fiorucci... LOL... Short textured square cuts and long piggybacked- permed hair were popular- shoulder pads hadn't debuted ...
