ActivismDesign Designing Obama Michael Beirut Scott Thomas Shepard Fairey
Kickstart the Next Generation of Design (Obama Approved)
3:21 pm Thursday Sep 17, 2009 by Kelsey Keith

Take a design director from the most emotionally-charged political campaign in recent history, add an innovative online fundraising platform, sprinkle liberally with design from across the land, and what do you get? Why, Designing Obama, a hardcover look at the artwork and graphic design inspired by and supporting the 2008 Barack Obama campaign.

Scott Thomas, Design Director for the Obama campaign, rounded up a slew of artists who made unofficial contributions to the grassroots campaign. The foreword to the book was written by seminal designers and design commentators Steven Heller and Michael Bierut. And Shepard Fairey wasn’t the only artist using propaganda for good; participants include everyone from Billi Kid and Delicious Design League to EMEK Studios, John Sokol, and Ron English. Wonder how many of these made the cut?

So far, the project has raised $10,406 of its $65,000 goal with 48 days and counting. It’s all up to you, friends.

Listen to Scott Thomas explain the impetus behind the project, follow the Designing Obama Twitter,  and pre-order the book for $50.
