As they say on the rap interwebs, First! (they still say that, right?) Looking for this badge. I come from a rap background, but always down to see new indie rock. Hey, Jay-Z's doing it!
My concert person is Ms. Dionna King, aka DKNY. She also comes from a rap background, but this would be her first CMJ. We're champs. And we wear fitted caps just so, but still know how to throw up the horns. Hook us up!
My favorite concert buddy is my friend Pamela, because she's from Texas, too, so she won't wrinkle up her nose at rootsy stuff, plus she's an amazing musician herself, so I learn things from her assessment of a show.
My favorite concert partner is DJ Nutritious. He and I rock a show, party, dance floor like no other duo. We got mad respect for the music. We'd rock the CMJ in style. Word.
My favorite concert buddy is the illustrious Kara Dake as she dances like she got the HOLY GHOST, tearing up the dancefloor in nonsensical rapture. Eliciting stares from men, bi-curious woman and band members alike, rolling with her fine assh pumps my status up for sure. If your at a show in the NYC area, and happen to see a blondie on the dance floor doing a texas two-step, the charleston, or the funky penguin, it is likely to be Kara Dake, my favorite concert buddy.
My show buddy moved to London, I have been crushed and heartbroken ever since, having random one-show stands. I am looking for that new special someone to share long walks in the rain or snow to faraway venues. Country music devotees need not apply.
I haven't put myself out there in so long and NY is so competitive, a pair of CMJ badges would definitely give me an edge on the scene…

Jeff Weinberg is THE best concert buddy. With his strong, broad shoulders he boosts me up over the crowd, his deep, souful voice singing along with our favorite indie and electronica melodies. This boy's got the rhythym and brings the funk…you'd never know this guy wore pocket protectors and a mouth guard in middle school by the way he breaks and gyrates with the other funky boys. Oh, and he smells really good, too.
we make a good team, don't we jrweinb??
My favorite concert buddy is my sister, Debby, because she can dance the pants of the anyone; is happiest seeing live music; can make even the most uptight crowd loose; will hang out till dawn; flirt with the hottest guys (no matter their sexual preference) and it will be reciprocated; dress sexy; tell jokes and make me laugh hysterically; put me up at her house and make me a fab breakfast in the morning, and most importantly, she'd be the first one to get my lazy ass out the door and to a show in the first place.
My favorite concert buddy is my sister, Dawn because we have been attending concerts together since our first at age 7…The Beach Boys! Clearly our musically taste has grown from 1960's pop, but hey we still find music as our common interest!
My favorite concert buddy is Stacie (sfreasier), right above me in this comment thread, in fact! She loves every musical genre you could think of and is right at home at just about any show…deadheads, headbangers, punkers, rastas, laid back in the lawn seats, chilling in the VIP section, rocking out in the front row…Stacie is up for it, and has done them all, in fact! She can create a mosh pit at Green Day, mellow out at Dylan, or get the lighters flaming at Kings of Leon. A concert goer who knows how to have a great time, how can you not take her?
My favorite concert buddy is my friend Jill because we've known each other for so long that we can finish each other's sentences and we always have each other's back!
My favorite concert buddy is my girlfriend Sara, because if I picked anyone else she would kick my ass!
My favorite concert buddy is the myself, because, I don't have to feel obligated to buy drinks, to have a conversation during the music, worry about meeting or being on time and can leave when I want or go to another show without argument. Pretty hard to beat unless you need to talk a lot or want to hitch a ride.
My favorite concert buddy is my sweetie, Mike G, because he's always at least at hot as the lead singer.
my favorite concert buddy is the bottle of jack daniels i stow in my purse.
My favorite concert buddy in the whole wide world is Paul Kekalos. His encyclopedic knowledge of music is like going to a show with Rob Gordon, and between bands I quiz him on how he manages to be a responsible husband and father while still attending at least 100 live shows per year. And he usually sermonizes on the benefits of ear plugs, to which I answer "what?"
And he always buys more than his fair share of beer.
i haven't seen so many comments on one post before … favorite concert buddy is Daniella. Simply because she's always ready to jump a gate. She's never afraid of getting into a mosh pit or two. Torrential down pour doesn't scare her. She's patient because deep down she knows that sometimes it takes an artist a few mins to get hype or in Lauryn Hills case (circa 2007) it can take an hour and a half. She understands, loves, and will die/kill for music. She can take a few elbows to the stomach. She doesn't mind her foot being stepped on. And most important of them all she's always available to headbang, fist pump, shoegaze, whine, moon walk, get juggy with it… and have fun!
My fave concert bud is Ali G! She also happens to be my niece (tho we are often told we look like sisters) – both of us love all types of music and our interests and eras of influence span the classic and famous to the indie and experimental. We may have been the only ones who knew every word to both Lil Dragon & Q-Tip @ Central Park this summer. We've taken road trips to see our fave bands, and have eaten rice to save enough for concert tickets. We can be seen any and everywhere from Crash to BAM, Webster to the Hudson, or M2 to Pub Ass. We love nyc and live music so you need us at CMJ!
My fave concert buddy is Andrea my wife, we share a lot of think and most of all our love for the music in general… Love her, love the music, would love to win the badges… PEACE OUT!
Oh JeanJeanie, you TOO are my favorite concert buddy, because we are ultimate concert-goers! we get LIVE! As my aunt/roomate/cosmic-twin mentioned in the above, you need us at CMJ. Because we're the girls at shows who dance salsa to Chromeo in the front row at Webster hall, and then proceed to ask Pee Thugg for a drag of his cigarette, followed by being hoisted up on stage to take a quick camera phone pic, which Pee happily cheesed for. that's a true story. Jealous, I know! We've flown to see Jamiroquai from NY to Chigago for a 16 hr trip. We've made calls to people in LA to get us into to Bowery Electric when the list was shut down (that place really is too small). We're making Tshirts to see Wallpaper in Cameo in w'burg in 2 WEEKS. Who else makes their own band tshirts, and feels no shame about it? exactly!
Basically, music is what we do. it's who we are, and what we're all about. There is nothing we won't do for each other, and there is no length too great for quality music. Because yes, we ate ramen for 3 days solid so we could afford Wolfmother tickets the day they went on sale. We are that awesome so, pick us!
My favorite concert buddy is my brother Jonathan because he's always down to go out. It's hard finding somebody with similar taste in music that will go to concerts on weekdays with you, so i'm lucky i have him! Sometimes i go to shows by myself, but that sucks and the ride there and back from the show can be lonely : (
Jon is a trouper and always willing to do new things. He's a great dancer and is never afraid to boogie even if no one else is. Three cheers for Jon!
My favorite concert buddy is my friend Steve. At first he was the creepy guy that drove my friend in a old VW Bug to Dylan show in Delaware that he met on the Internet. Then, once I became an avid Dylan bootleg collector, I began to attend shows with him. Now, six years later, we attend Sonic Youth shows often, he has a SY shirt from '94 he still wears, and younger fans are in awe of his dorkiness. He also knows most of the Mekons personally, most of Dylans sound guys and a lot of the staff of Bloodshot Records. In short, he is a great older music dweeb who reminiscences how great Brownies was or how Sonic Youth/Neil Young/Social Distortion was the loudest show he ever went to, or his experience of proposing to his wife at a Pixies show. Classic stuff.
Taylor Traut. No1 best person. Came to the east coast for college from LA and didnt know who simon and garfunkel were….I taught her and now she teaches me. Oh how she rocks the scene… always wants to learn about and understand every new band with the interest and antici………..PATION that a only she genuinely feels…. like a music virgin itching to hear rock n roll for the first time – EVERY TIME! i love her and i hope she reads this out in CA bc she's coming back for CMJ and hooking it for free would be AMAZING!!!!!!!!!
My favorite concert buddy is Adam (two comments below!), because he shares a true appreciation for great live music and is pretty much the best undiscovered drummer I know, and I can tell he gets his groove on vicariously through whoever's performing on stage.
DKNY here and my favorite concert mate is BMI. that's us standing in the back within proximity of something cozy to lean on, arms crossed rocking the fuck out. BMI is the one with the sneer (it's just a tool to hide his heart of gold)
I can see anything with him. Jeezy to Japandroids. Fitteds to the side. It's the Southern in us, we stick together like vegetable spread..
My favorite concert companion is this epileptic girl I know. It’s awesome because whenever a strobe light goes off she buries her face in my shoulder so she won’t have a seizure. I’m a lonely old man, so that is really all the action I get these days.
There will be strobes at some of these shows, right?
Rachel Leah would be my "badge-mate" – we met in 2001 at the NYU newspaper and quickly became a team. She was the photographer and I was the writer, and by CMJ 2002 we were badged up and covering everything in site. We both work in the music industry, but those days seem so long ago…it would be great to relive them. I'm sure we'd attend the panels as well as the shows.
my favorite show-going buddy is my friend adam o. he's awesome to see rock shows with because he likes music and he's funny and fun and can really cut a rug.
My mom because she wore ear plugs and read a book at a Backstreet Boys concert.
My best concert buddy is my boyfriend Andy. He has re-introduced me to the world of live music performances. Being entrenched in the management end of the performing arts, I had been shuttered away from the awesomeness that is live performance of music. In the past, I would normally go to maybe 1 concert a year. Now, I'm going to 6 concerts in just 1 month! He has also helped me discover new artists to are soon to be the next big thing. :) Thanks Andy!
My favorite concert buddy is my bestie, Nicole, b/c she is a trooper and a guaranteed good time no matter what the circumstance. She didn't hesitate to throw on a poncho & rain boots to slosh around in the mud with me at All Points West, start a sing-a-long to pass time while waiting on line for over an hour for a shuttle bus following a KOL show, or tailgate in a steaming hot parking lot pre-show to get the full Jimmy Buffet experience. Her passion for new music is contagious and I know we'd have a blast (as always).
My favorite concert mate is my friend Ziggy. He's down for any show, from jazz to metal, rock to lo-fi…plus, he's not shy, so we always end up meeting such hilarious and random people. Best thing about it is he's done photography for concerts for about 5 years now and every time he does in nyc, he tries to get me in for free….and working for a legal non-profit it really helps to have any free hook up whatsoever, as I can't afford shows like I used to. I'd love to strut around CMJ this year and enjoy a last gasp of fantasy living the musician dream. Thanks for having this contest.
my favorite concert buddy is melissa. back in high school, she'd ignore me when i made fun of her backstreet boys fandom, and then reject my attempts to get her to switch to the beastie boys. these days, she's the one introducing me to new, good music and getting me to go to shows. look for her signature arm-flailing dance moves, which are hard to describe–but imagine what someone would look like if, after 20-something years of a no-dancing policy, they decided one day that it was okay to dance in public and then let out everything they'd been holding in–that's it!
I wanted to express in the truly best way
But found words just can't really convey
How awesome my show buddy is, named Chuck.
So I submit with hope and some luck,
that we rock and be merry in this year's CMJ
Can't cosign veggie spread (that *ish is disgusting, use butter), but can def cosign the CMJ lineup. DKNY and I somehow made it out to the YYY's show this week and just looking at the lineup at Williamsburg Music Hall alone reinforced just how much WE NEED THESE BADGES! I mean, c'mon! Not only are we a great addition to any show, we also both got taken by the Recession Boogeyman [(c) Hollywood Hobbs] so right now our paper don't stack, it clangs – aka, this is our only in! C'mon, Flavorpill! You can do it!!!!!!!! (And did I mention: FIRST!!!!!!)
show buddy Loren
any show is better with her
dance, sing along, rock out
My husband Eric is my favorite concert buddy because he's the music snob of our married duo and if I didn't name him as my favorite concert buddy, he might divorce me ;)
Fav concert buddy is Shawn because usually one of us retains enough sobriety to remember bits and pieces of the concerts we attend to remind the other what happen in the haze :) A little Jack D is also are third buddy!
My favorite person to take to a concert is my wife Tara because I always like to take the opportunity to show off my great taste in music and have her hear better music than the crap she listens to.
My best concert buddy is my best friend Derek Allenby for one reason in particular. Every single show we've been to together, he's demanded that I lift him up so he can crowd surf. And every time, he ends up landing face first into a gross puddle of beer. But he never gives up hope.
IJ Hines is the best concert buddy anyone could hope for. For 16 years he's accompanied me to many many shows, not knowing what he was in for most of the time. He always saves my spot on the floor if I have to go to the bathroom. He's tall, I'm short so even though he can see anywhere, he'll stand up front with me, only to get his ears blown out by speakers and get dirty looks from other shorties! He does his best to stay out of their way too though as to not obstruct their view. He even lets me stand on his feet sometimes to give me a little height. He is also a great concert buddy to others as he will go out and support any friends or friends of friends whenever possible. Would be so great to attend CMJ with him and discover all the new music CMJ has to offer.
My favorite show buddy is Craig Vanderlay. We get it in!
Favorite concert buddy by far is my hubbie…we met post-Madonna concert at a club. We dance, DJ together and even make our own music.
me, myself and I; living in the NYC area, I can usually decide spur of the moment who I want to see, such as Rhys Chatham, Ulrich Schnauss and Wire…all same-day decisions
My favorite concert buddy would be my partner, Katherine, because her capacity for Presence makes her very relaxed, in her Meditation Facilitator Intuitive Healer way, and also makes her lots fun to be around in her spontaneous "Let's Live it Up" Southern California-ness!
hey, im coming in from LA, and it would be great to see some shows with my buddy josh, a music afficionado, and all around good guy who could use a bit of Rand R. Personally, i love the NY night life, and would relish the opportunity to see some great music NYC style!
my favorite concert buddy has to be my girlfriend cassandra.
sure, we share many musical interests in common. but we
also have musical interests that clash. still, she'll go to see
a band with me that i adore, no questions asked. and i'll do
the same for her. ultimately, we always have a terrific time.
manic street preachers tonite! :D
My favorite concert buddy is Facebook. Allows me to quickly recruit friends to shows as well as hear about upcoming concerts from friends. My concert intake continues to increase and facebook is an important part of the reason why.
My fave concert buddy is my best friend Arnie. We worked together at Tower records and went to some amazing shows of artists before they "blew up" -Common, Angie Stone, Jill Scott, Tricky and Macy Gray just to name a few. I also volunteered for The New Music Seminar back in the day for a couple of years and would love the opportunity to experience a music marathon once again! Go Flavorpill!!!
My favorite concert buddy would have to be my brother Scott, cause we're thick as thieves.
Brian Blackout, without a doubt.
Finalist in the Soul Clap danceoffs, dj extraordinaire, needer of no-water though he's sweating it all out
through his dancing pores. Brightly shirted, a pulsing flash from a party monster discodancing lighthouse amongst all the leaning towers of pisa doing the lame indie rock sway. The perfect beacon of light for a girl like me lost in the tipsy sea of people. You can tell music thrills him down to the deepout bottom of that well and he passes out those reserves like big deep buckets going in to share the dancefloor love. People don't dance no more? Hah! He's like a dancing musicyclopedia with feet and hands!! He would love this CMJ pass so much because he couldn't otherwise afford one (nor could I as we are both freelancers), he'd probably make you a hypercolor flyer declaring his love for Flavorpill to put up on your website (he's a graphic and web designer). People like Brian keep New York alive.
Ruben Aboy, Jr. a self described music elitist and mind expander. He is originally from Miami, and used to love freestyle and the club scene. He is a gay who loves old Madonna and something he can dance to. But he loves lyrics and real musicians who touch your soul when they play a bar of music. I met him at my old job in a basement on the UES at the pediatric medical office from hell with rich snobs and their children snotting all over us. We discovered our mutual love for music, when he proclaimed his life long love for Depeche Mode in the office and my heart stopped. Had I found a kindred spirit in the depths of Hades. Chatting up bands we loved, songs we couldn’t not dance to, bands we would travel the world to see started us off slow and steady (first base). We then began our deep twisted musical love affair/relationship by making each other mix CDs. We themed the seasons, weather, songs inspired by crazy patients and insane co-workers, eachother’s love lives or lack thereof, oldies but goodies tunes and new GREAT bands&songs the other just needed to add to their life and be exposed to asap. We upgraded from mix CDs (second base) to shows easily…We’d find little shows on the LES of bands we’d found on obscure blogs, run to Merc Lounge to buy tickets for shows we had to drag the other to. He took me to the Knife show at Webster hall, and it changed my life. Last year was our first CMJ together, and we were a both bit heartbroken, unemployed and partially drunk most of the time, I had begged old friends to borrow their badges, we got into a few show but the music, it was that music that got us through the hard times like it reliably always does. This man has single handledly expanded my musical horizons not only by exposing me to stuff I wouldn’t listen to by myself but challenging me to find new and old music that is amazing. We both love music, especially CMJ up and coming music. Please pick us.
Wow Lynnie, how can I top that? I can't and probably wont. I will say you are def my concert buddy! You are an amazing woman who is deeply intellectual and brilliant. I am so grateful to Carnegie Hell just because it brought me to you (or visa versa). I still have and cherish every single mix CD that you made me and I have many ticket stubs of some of the most amazing concerts that we have been to. My favorite night (and boy its so hard just to pick one), but I would have to say The Klaxons/Bonde do Role show at Studio B was amazing. Do you remember how we rushed up to the front and the lead singer (Jamie) took my hat from my head and put it on for the rest of the show. You have def influenced my musical life as well and I will tell you that you haven't been wrong once. You called Grizzly Bear & St. Vincent. Last year we discovered Friendly fires and passion pit (among others, what happened to the Seabillies?) at the CMJ festival and after reviewing the line up this year I hope that we manage to squirm our way into a few shows. Since I am still unemployed at the moment, I would hope that we get chosen for it will be a week neither of us will ever forget.
Lynan Saperstein is my concert buddy! We are total NSYNC (hahaha) when it comes to music. She tends to like the more mellow/folky sound and I always go for the high energy/electronic sound. Its great cause we usually meet up right in the middle and share with each other our new found discovery. She is constantly getting compliments on her style and I feel that NYC is that much better because of her. Another one of my favorite concert moments with her was when we went to see (besides Spring Awakening), was when we went to see the YYYs at Irving Plaza and we made our way to the front just so we could be within Karen O spitting range (It still makes me laugh). She is and always will be my concert buddy!
My concert buddy is my friend Liz. She taught me how to work my way up to the front of the stage, maximize my dance space at a crowded concert & the importance of not breaking the seal to early. She is my Yoda.
We have a blast together so winning these passes would be awesome.
Oh, Ian…what would I do if I couldn't drag you to a Jandek concert…
We are two in one bottle. We come in handy. Ryan Gill and I have been best buddies when it comes to attending shows in NYC. You can count on her. We volunteered at a CMJ official after party music industry event last year and we definitely love to do it again. I commute all the way from upstate to the city whenever I volunteer. It has been a privilege working and giving a helping hand to these musicians and artists.
MY ONE AND ONLY BIG BROTHER ! Together we have rocked a million parties, and will rock a million more. (Although we are yet to do CMJ !!) Remember those two crazy white boys shakin their lanky limbs in front of the stage?
He always gets my back, even when his is wobbly. He never gets busted, never gets me busted. Nothing too high, nothing too low. He holds the door backstage and makes us look like we're supposed to be there.
We've been seen shakin it on summerstage videos, on rooftops, on boats (motherf##ker!), in houseparties, on stage, in basements, in pools, at your mom's, in your dreams…
We've said we're reporters, bloggers, photographers, a&r, internet distributors, club promoters, foreign artists… but I doubt any of those will get us into CMJ ! Now we are finally making music together, and we've got to hear all that new sound and meet those funky people…
HOOK IT UP FOR THE LOVE OF MUSIC AND MY BIG BRO !!!!!
My favorite person to go to shows with is my husband Ray. Music is what brought us together, literally. Our first conversation when we met at a friend’s party was about music and since then we’ve spent countless hours discussing/debating music and going to shows. We both love live music and seeing new bands. We like to get to shows in time to stake out our sweet spot. We may not always have the same taste in music (most of the time we do) but he is definitely my fave person to see shows with – and he enjoys my booty shaking ;)
Thanks BB. That’s sweet of you. My dear wife is definitely my favorite concert buddy. Most of our dates, pre and post marriage, are to see live bands. I even proposed to her after seeing Sonic Youth on the 4th of July 2008. BB is always up to go see a show. We get to as many as we can. We are always telling one another about new bands we’ve heard. I do enjoy her booty shaking, as much as she enjoys mine.
My favorite concert buddies are my long time besties, Ashlee and Anna. There was one time Ashlee had forgotten her I.D. for a 19+ show and although she was way over 19+, we weren’t let into the show, so instead of fretting, we decided to stand outside the venue and enjoy the distant clanging of drums and strings. See, we don’t even have to be inside the venue to have fun. Imagine how much fun we’d have if we were inside? Plus, we love dancing.
