I don't share the authors enthusiasm for the work as "art" though I do appreciate the skill and effort involved in the design. Creation using digital tools is evolving and we can place Maya Lin amongst the masses. Being amongst the masses is a great theme, an we see it in many artists work - I think it comes from a evry honest perspective, if a bit too earnest for my tastes - what the designers call interior architecture and which was used in a recent art museum display in California. Not to mention the memorial to all the wine drunk in chelsea - a work composed of millions of cups, or Stefan Sagmeister, whos graphic designe epitomizes the esthetic for me, having grown up in the nineties. In short, lyricism tends to be generic.

As a cynic and a jaded esthete I can't help but wonder if there can be too much spectacle in the world. WHile I wait for something that truly moves my cold heart, I will be looking forward to my next video game Katamari Damacy.

The major works included in Lin's "Three Ways of Looking at the Earth" at Pace (2x4 Landscape, Water Line and Blue Lake Pass) were originally commissioned by the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington as part of the touring exhibition "Maya Lin: Systematic Landscapes" ( April 22, 2006 – September 3, 2006). After these works were created for presentation at the Henry, the exhibition traveled to Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis, (September 7 – December 30, 2007), Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, (March 29 – June 30, 2008), De Young Museum, San Francisco, (October 25, 2008 – January 18, 2009), and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

Viewers can see the museum exhibition here: http://www.henryart.org/exhibitions/past/157/2006... The exhibition link also points to the accompanying publication, Lin's Art:21 feature, and an excellent video created by the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis.
