Rate-a-Trailer: Jake Gyllenhaal in Prince of Persia
4:44 pm Monday Nov 2, 2009 by Caroline Stanley

The trailer for Disney’s upcoming action flick Prince of Persia, which is based on the videogame franchise of the same name, leaked online today after running on British TV. Seeing the ever-vulnerable Jake Gyllenhaal in the role of action hero is a little strange — especially when he’s going up against a villain like Ben Kingsley. The guy could eat Donnie Darko for lunch.

Jake plays a character called Prince Dastan who discovers a dagger with the power to turn back time. Kingsley wants to get his hands on the weapon in order to unleash a sandstorm that will destroy the world. Gemma Arterton (Strawberry Fields from Quantum of Solace) plays the love interest — a rival princess who teams up with the Prince to help stop him. When Dastan is tricked into releasing the Sands of Time, thus destroying his kingdom and turning his subjects into demons, he and the princess must make things right.

According to Cinematical, producer Jerry Bruckheimer had this to say about the film: “We took our time developing it. Over a number of years we developed it and worked with it and the writers until we got to a place where we felt we really had a good screenplay. That’s the key, telling a good story… I think that’s the key to our success. Create interesting characters, create romance, create action, have you care about the characters, and put them in very dramatic situations. That’s what we’ve done, with Jordan’s help.”

Prince of Persia is due out in theaters May 28, 2010. What do you think? Does it have the potential to become the next Pirates of the Caribbean?
