Good points?I might note that as somebody who actually doesn’t write on blogs much (in reality, this can be my first post), I don’t think the term ‘lurker’ could be very turning into to a non-posting reader. It’s no longer your fault in the slightest degree , but most likely the blogosphere could come up with a better, non-creepy title for the 90% folks that enjoy reading the content .

I cannot for the life of me understand why it matters if animals suffer to meet our needs or to satisfy our pleasures. Morals are a fictional lie humans tell themselves when they forget they are only products of evolutionary chance. Love animals well or kill them to eat their flesh and wear their skins. In my opinion I think that the more enlightening parts that JSF touched on were the impacts of factory farming on the environment as well as its impacts on our health. Most of us that are inclined to pick up this book would be well aware that factory farming involves much animal cruelty. It’s a good book which brings a variety of pertinent issues to the mainstream, however, I think its major downside was the way it was written. I think it was a little too colloquial and I didn’t find his style engaging. I found the interspersed storytelling too choppy and distracting – I think there could’ve been a little less of it. I got to a point where I just wanted to read more hard facts. To my mind, I think this is what made the book come across as a little too self-indulgent of a project. However, overall, it’s still a good book and I would recommend it.

The earth is sick. AS evidence, the most plentiful source of meat BY FAR is never eaten – or at least so rarely that a single meal garners world-wide press. I posit that the global eco-system is unbalanced and unhealthy because not enough PEOPLE are getting eaten.

I found “Eating Animals” to be an important contribution to a more compassionate world, and I’m very happy to see the book getting so much exposure. It’s a critical topic, and the public discourse JSF has inspired has helped push veganism further into the mainstream. With all the nutritious, delicious plant-based foods we have to choose from, there’s simply no reason for us to eat animals or their secretions (milk and eggs).

I just finished Foer’s book and found it quite compelling. I respectfully disagree with your review. I think most people who pick up Eating Animals and read it through will think twice the next time they are considering what to eat.
