Of all the news to come out of this year’s Television Critics Association press tour, Showtime’s might just be the most exciting: the network will adapt Just Kids, Patti Smith’s 2010 memoir of her years spent in New York City with Robert Mapplethorpe, into a limited series. Smith will produce and co-write the series with John Logan, currently the showrunner for Showtime’s Victorian horror series Penny Dreadful.

While the series has yet to cast its leads or set a release date, Smith elaborated on her decision to bring her book to the small screen in a Showtime press release:

“A limited series on SHOWTIME will allow us to explore the characters more deeply, enabling us to develop stories beyond the book and allow a measure of unorthodox presentation,” says Smith. “The medium of a television limited series offers narrative freedom and a chance to expand upon the themes of the book.”

Smith’s sequel memoir, M Train, is due out October 6th.
