Shonda Rhimes Collaborating With ‘Trophy Wife’s’ Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern on New ABC Comedy

Did ABC seriously just buy another Shonda Rhimes show? Well, yes, of course they did, and thank heavens for that. The Wrap reports that Rhimes and Betsy Beers’ production company, Shondaland, has sold the network a comedy pitch called Splitsville, written and executive produced by Trophy Wife creators Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern.

The show has an intriguing premise; as Entertainment Weekly describes it, “Splitsville tells the story of the single residents of a suburban cul-de-sac who join forces to raise their kids and weather the storm in the wake of a wave of divorces.”

Though it’s not clear what the gender mix of these parents will be, it’s easy to imagine the show making an effective vehicle for the feminist themes Rhimes, Haskins, and Halpern all favor. Will we see single moms banding together to make their lives work without men? Single dads doing some genuine, hands-on parenting?

No matter what Splitsville has in store, it’s exciting to see Shondaland get serious about comedy — and the Trophy Wife team get another shot at network glory.
