Watch: Jesse Custer, the Angelic/Demonic Man of the Cloth, Gets Violent in Trailer for Seth Rogen’s ‘Preacher’

If you’ve been curious — ever since the announcement that Seth Rogen was co-developing and co-directing (at least the pilot of) AMC’s series adaptation of Preacher — to see how Rogen (and frequent partner Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg) would visualize something as grand and abstract as the search to find God, a decent glimpse has finally been provided. (The show itself will air on AMC sometime in 2016.)

Like the comic (created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon) on which it’s based, the series looks like a brutal Western commingled with denominational fantasy. The trailer has a Carnivale-y feel, which, given that that stunning and all-too-short-lived show never got to fully realize its God reincarnate v. Devil reincarnate plot line, makes it all the more exciting.

The trailer shows us a hefty first look at Dominic Cooper’s portrayal of the protagonist, Jesse Custer — a preacher who’s possessed by a demon/angel hybrid (named Genesis in the comics), whose, er, genesis as a bodied being (inside Custer) led God out of heaven. Now, Custer is searching for God. In the trailer, a child asks the preacher to hurt his father, and this triggers a juxtaposition of buttoned up preaching and a rundown of other bouts of violence Custer has been known to stir, with the help of his girlfriend Tulip (Ruth Negga) and his vampiric bestie, Cassiday (Joe Gilgun).
