Bill Hader Cast in Film Inspired by David Foster Wallace

The Wrap reports that Bill Hader is set to star in Empress of Serenity, a dramedy loosely inspired by David Foster Wallace’s essay “A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again.” The film will be the directorial debut of novelist Jesse Andrews, who authored 2012’s Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and penned the screenplay for its film adaptation, released earlier this year.

Empress of Serenity centers on an animal rights lawyer (Hader) who, after the death of his mother, embarks on a 45-day cruise with his estranged father in an attempt to mend their relationship. The premise, of course, is somewhat different from that of Wallace’s piece, in which a weeklong luxury cruise prompts one of the more entertaining existential crises in magazine journalism.

News of the film comes mere months after the release of the critically acclaimed The End of the Tour, starring Jason Segel as Wallace, as well as the equally lauded Trainwreck, in which Hader co-starred alongside Amy Schumer.
