Watch Iggy Pop and Josh Homme Perform “Gardenia,” Talk to Colbert

Yesterday, it was announced that Iggy Pop and Josh Homme had secretly recorded an album, Post Pop Depression, in the desert. Now, after the duo appeared on last night’s Late Show, we know how the album might sound, and also how the two got together.

“I proposed to Josh by text from my flip phone,” Iggy Pop says to Colbert, laughing, and that about sums up the tone of the conversation the three of them had. The story, in total, is apparently that he and Homme shacked up in Joshua Tree, spent three weeks trying to “dazzle” one another. The whole thing is very homoerotic, what with the sharing of French long johns and all, but, if their performance is any indication, it was totally worth it.

The duo — along with a backing band, of course — performed “Gardenia,” a pretty ripping jam that is totally par for the course as far as Homme’s desert-grown sound goes, kind of brooding but also very weird. The lyrics are maybe Iggy Pop at his controversial worst, though, as he describes a woman with a “deep ass” who has “slant devil eyes.” Yikes, Iggy.

Watch the performance and conversation below. Post Pop Depression is out March 18.
