Saoirse Ronan to Star in Greta Gerwig’s Directorial Debut

It’s been a few very big months for Saoirse Ronan, who starred in our film editor’s favorite film of 2015, and who was subsequently nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award for her role in that film. She seems to be riding that wave of success into the next phase of her career, as it’s just been announced that she has signed on to star in Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut, Lady Bird.

For what it’s worth, the thin plot details of Lady Bird are as follows: Ronan will play a high school senior spending her last year at home in Sacremento before, presumably, heading off to college. Intriguing.

There’s little meat to this item, but the fact that it’s two of Hollywood’s most exciting actresses teaming up for Gerwig’s directorial debut makes it worth the attention. To be clear, this isn’t Gerwig’s first time behind the camera altogether, as she co-directed Nights and Weekends with Joe Swanberg. And worry not: Ronan will film this around her working schedule on the new Broadway production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, which begins late February.

Production on Lady Bird begins this spring.
