Watch the Trailer for Sophia Takal’s Chilling and Brilliant ‘Always Shine’

Sophia Takal’s Always Shine was easily the best film of this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, a masterfully executed, insightful psychological thriller about womanhood and Hollywood. It hits theaters in December – and not a moment too soon – so we’ve finally got a trailer for this unnerving two-hander, and it’s a scorcher:

Unsurprisingly, it’s sort of a perfect tease, revealing the unsettling style and tone of the picture, while carefully keeping its secrets. And it only hints at the depth and richness of the two leading turns, by Mackenzie Davis (Halt and Catch Fire) and Caitlin FitzGerald (Masters of Sex). The complexity of the writing there is no surprise; Takal is a performer herself (she’s appeared in V/H/S, Supporting Characters, and All the Light in the Sky, among many others), and knows a thing or two about the frustrations of the working actor.

Always Shine is out in select cities on December 2; in the meantime, here’s its equally striking poster.
