Chance the Rapper, Childish Gambino, Lorde to Play Governors Ball

Just a day after the announcement of the Coachella lineup comes that of New York’s own highly concentrated bombardment of sounds and body odors — Governors Ball. As usual, subjective reality that we live in, there are some main acts that’ll stir excitement for some, and boredom and/or bafflement from others. For example, Tool, who, per Rolling Stone, are playing their first New York City show in 12 years, is headlining, as is Phoenix, who… still made “Lisztomania.”

Because of said subjectivity, I’ll just point out some of the names that elicit personal excitement and/or excitement-by-relevance. First, Chance the Rapper and Childish Gambino are both headlining; the latter is particularly worth noting because 2016’s Awaken, My Love! was arguably his richest album, and because other projects — like writing and starring in his own TV series, and, oh right, Star Warswill likely preclude Donald Glover from doing much performing of that material.

As pictured above, the two collaborated on the Childish Gambino track “The Worst Guys”; in 2014, as Consequence of Sound points out, Chance crashed Childish Gambino’s set at this very festival; and just yesterday it appeared that the two were teasing a new collaboration via Instagram. So, perhaps their sharing of the Governors Ball roster will give them an opportunity to reveal whatever this may be — if it’s anything.

Meanwhile, Lorde will be also performing, and has been talking about the near-completion of a new album for a while, so audiences will hopefully see her debuting new tracks as well. Among other standouts: Wu-Tang Clan, Beach House, Charli XCX, Air, Rae Sremmurd, Schoolboy Q, and Parquet Courts.

Here’s the full list. The festival will take place from June 2 to June 4, and tickets go on sale this Friday, January 6 at 12 p.m. EST.
