Sir Patrick Stewart to Play Sought-After Role of Poop Emoji in ‘Emoji Movie’

Sir Patrick Stewart, who is a Sir, will also soon be Poop. He’ll be playing the famous substance in none other than Emoji Movie.

Of course, the juxtaposition of Stewart’s theatrical gravitas and literal knightliness with the silly word that means the silly thing — Poop — is surely a large part of the casting intent. But that doesn’t make it any less odd to be able to first of all be able to say that Emojis are getting their own movie, and that within that movie will be a dapper anthropomorphized turd played by veteran theater actor Patrick Stewart.

Granted, there have always been two existing Stewarts: the venerable theater Stewart and the oft-wonderfully silly film/TV Stewart: that Stewart has done a ton of voice acting for other, erm, equally un-serious film projects in the past, such as Gnomeo and Juliet and whatever Bambi II is.

Sony Pictures shared the news on Twitter, with a first look at the new face of the world’s most famous piece of digital dung:

The 3-D computer animated film also features Ilana Glazer, Maya Rudolph, T.J. Miller, James Corden, Rob Riggle, Steven Wright, and Tom Kane voicing all the thumbs’ best friends. It’s set for release August 4.
