The Best and Worst of Last Night’s ‘SNL’ with Aziz Ansari

Aziz Ansari, the son of Muslim immigrants, hosted SNL last night — just one day after Donald Trump’s inauguration as president of the United States. “Being Muslim American already carries a decent amount of baggage,” Ansari wrote for the New York Times last summer. “In our culture, when people think ‘Muslim,’ the picture in their heads is not usually of the Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or the kid who left the boy band One Direction. It’s of a scary terrorist character from ‘Homeland’ or some monster from the news.” Ansari spent his stand-up monologue talking about these kind of racist stereotypes and more. See how it all went down last night, below.

The Best

“Vladimir Putin Cold Open”

The thrill of shirtless Putin is gone, but Kate McKinnon’s Olya Povlatsky in a pink pussy hat giving a sly sign of solidarity is gold.

“Aziz Ansari Stand-Up Monologue”

Ansari on Trump: “Pretty cool to know, though, that he’s probably at home right now watching a brown guy make fun of him.”

“Beat the Bookworm”

Meet the only youngish person in America who is clueless about ’90s pop culture.

“La La Land Interrogation”

La La Land haters, you are not alone.

“Kellyanne Conway”

Kellyanne, Chicago-style.

“Attorney Ad”

What would SNL do without funny, reliable Bobby Moynihan?

“Weekend Update”

Queen Leslie Jones.

“Bedroom”

Dirty talk: “What’s up, bitch? I make more money than you.”

The Worst

“Five Stars”

Zero stars.

“Pizza Town”

An offense to pizzas everywhere.

“To Sir with Love”

And then things got a little awkward.
