July Just Got a Little More ‘Insecure’

Issa Rae, the creator and star of HBO’s Insecure, posted a video on Twitter yesterday announcing the premiere date for the comedy’s second season: Although the first season ended only in November, the show will mercifully return on July 23.

Insecure, which grew out of Rae’s popular web series, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, had a stellar debut season — warm, funny, confident, and excellently plotted. The show follows best friends Issa (Rae), who’s stuck in an unrewarding job and a stagnant long-term relationship, and Molly (Yvonne Orji), a corporate lawyer struggling to find a worthy mate. In the season finale (spoiler alert!), Issa’s long-suffering boyfriend, Lawrence (Jay Ellis), found out that she slept with an ex and ran straight into the arms (well, more like between the legs) of another woman.

In the video, Rae vows to answer some of our “burning questions” about Season 2: Is Issa single? Is Molly? “No comment,” Rae says. But there’s one question we all know the answer to: “Is Lawrence still fine? Yeah. I’ll comment on that all day.”
