Fascinating Street Shots of Rodeo Drive Shoppers in the ’80s

You might know Anthony Hernandez for his beautiful landscape photography, but back in the ’80s the artist turned his lens on a rarefied subject: the shoppers of Beverly Hills. The resulting images — which mark the first time he had worked in color — provide a brilliant visual time capsule, full of big hair, cinched waists, and a few outfits that wouldn’t look too out of place in modern-day Bushwick. “I was trying to be invisible,” he has said. “I didn’t want the confrontations that come with taking more considered photographs.” Click through to check out a selection of photos, which can all be found in the recently published book Rodeo Drive, 1984. … Read More

In Case You Missed It: From Crazy Domes to Funny Authors

This week at Flavorwire, we looked at some epically bad plans for New York City over the years — and by “epically bad,” we mean putting a two-mile-wide dome up over midtown Manhattan and filling in the Hudson. Minimal Posters of NYC’s Subway Lines

Making a map of New York City’s complicated subway system that is geographically accurate and easy on the eyes is no simple task — just ask Massimo Vignelli. Spotted by ANIMAL, these minimal beauties by designer Andrew Lynch aren’t just pretty to look at — they’re also true to scale. “This series of posters tries to flip the original rational for clean design on its head,” he explains on the recently funded Kickstarter for the project. “Instead of creating a map showing the routes of each line abstracted to fit into a small map each poster shows just one train line by itself, stripped away from its context, with a description and statistics provided. Why do it this way? I wanted to show the viewer something they see everyday but in a completely new, almost unrecognizable way; the way it actually looks.” Click through to view all nine posters in the candy-colored set. … Read More

Gorgeous Long-Exposure Shots That Transform New York City Landmarks

If there’s one thing most New Yorkers find impossible, it’s slowing down. For his City Stages series, photographer Matthew Pillsbury imposes a hushed calm on normally busy settings, shooting hour-length exposures with a large format 8 X 10 view camera. The effect isn’t just lovely to look at; it also belies a deeper meaning. “The ghostlike appearance of my subjects wasn’t something I set out to pursue,” he explained to Slate. “But I do find it fascinating to highlight the fragility, the evanescence of our lives. We are here only briefly. Every moment passing bringing us closer to our last. Much of photography is an attempt to stop the clock—to assert our presence: ‘I was here, I matter.’ Here, my photographs are doing something different: We are shown the fragility and fleeting nature of our presence.” Click through to view a selection of black-and-white images from the series. … Read More

Stereotyping You By Your Favorite Monopoly Piece

By now you’ve probably read that Hasbro plans to either retire the race car, iron, Scottie dog, wheelbarrow, shoe, top hat, thimble, or battleship — and they’re putting the decision in the hands of the public via the Monopoly Facebook page. Along with the “Save Your Token” campaign, they’re also letting people pick what the replacement piece should be — it’s a race between a kind of sad looking cat, a kind of sad looking diamond ring, a kind of sad looking guitar, a kind of sad looking helicopter, and a kind of sad looking robot. While we realize that all of this is just an extremely silly way of getting the 110-year-old board game board game back in the headlines, we couldn’t help but bite. After the jump, we attempt to uncover what your favorite Monopoly game piece says about you. Let us know which one you think deserves to be killed off in the comments. … Read More
