FeatBA: A Microcosm of Contemporary Argentinean Culture

3

As the summer melts into fall in Buenos Aires, the design culture in the so-called Paris of South America is just heating up. Declared the first City of Design by UNESCO for “its capacity to inspire others” (others include Berlin and Montreal),  Buenos Aires has the most design students in the world, with 35,000 design students at the Universidad de Buenos Aires alone. With such a huge pool of talent to pull from, Texas native and world-wanderer Grant C. Man vs. Machine: The Singularity Summit 2009

Over 800 technology obsessed “futurists” — some with bleached ’80s rocker hair, long ponytails, and rainbow socks with cowboy boots — gathered this weekend at the 92nd Street Y to discuss the Singularity: a point in time in the future when technology progresses so rapidly that man and machine become one and machine intelligence (artificial intelligence or AI) may surpass human intelligence. As smoke swirled like liquid in the green light- and incense-filled the room, a blonde pop star took the stage, joining her band. She looked like Diana, goddess of the hunt, but without her usual mask. Finally we got a good look at Karin Dreijer Andersson: Swedish electronic artist, mother of two, and one half of the famously elusive brother-sister duo, The Knife. Read More »

The Phish Report: Hits and Misses from the Jones Beach Reunion Show

1

Last Friday, Long Island swelled with torrential rain showers as over 15,000 Phish fans (some with tickets and some without) descended upon the Jones Beach amphitheater to catch the end of the epic band’s three-night run in Wantagh. While the four hirsute band members brought joy into the hearts of their delirious and dancing fans, there was plenty to irk the unconverted. After the jump, a list of highlights for phans and non-phans alike. Read More »
